The Panthers say they will be holding an open competition for the quarterback job during training camp after trading for Baker Mayfield and rookie left tackle Ickey Ekwonu isn’t picking any favorites in Mayfield’s battle with Sam Darnold.

Ekwonu told Jane Slater of NFL Media that he believes “competition brings best out of everybody” when asked about last week’s change to the quarterback landscape in Carolina. He also vowed to do the same job regardless of who the coaching staff picks to be on the field against the Browns in Week 1 of the regular season.

“Whoever the coaching staff puts out there, you know, I feel like we’ll be ready to go,” Ekwonu said. “We’re all just excited to enter training camp. I feel like we all got full confidence in the coaching staff and whoever’s back there, I’ll be doing everything I can to keep him safe.”

The Panthers drafted Ekwonu because one of the many issues plaguing their offense was pass protection. That makes the rookie a valuable piece of the offense regardless of who winds up taking the snaps.

I was gonna post this as a seperate thread but this seems like a good spot to post. Not sure if people have talked about this but Apparently Ikey attended the OL Masterminds Summit '22 this past weekend. Here's an interview, brief, about him going there and what he hoped to gain from going there. Also some extra content about Baker vs Darnold (like we all don't know Baker isn't winning that job lol), anyway it's the first minute and a half.

That title was a bait and switch. There was no ripping of Sam Darnold. This is the content I seek. False advertising.

      He was so much fun to watch as a player but is a prototypical example of the old "never meet your heroes" adage. Great player, not a great guy.

      Look.... if us BY "haters" give credit about his GWDs...... Will the BY stans also have honest discussion about the 55minutes before the last 5 in which BY has put up 9/20 for 78 yards 0 TDs???

      The way they are handling now is how they should have handled it from the start instead of that you get a series, you a get a series. Let Chuba spell until he had some of his step back.  We definitely could have put a better showing against Buffalo and their weak run defense had we employed the same game plan we did against Green Bay. Saints were determined to stop the run and make Bryce beat them, Atlanta had similar plan and the coaches and Bryce were able to respond.  Rico although didnt have the best rushing game was vital in the passing game and his catch and run help get us into the redzone there at the end of regulation probably should have been a touchdown that out of bounds was a judgement call it wasn't conclusive and thus should have went with the original call on the field.  Roco brings that dawg to the offense that it shorely lacked up until Miami game. Interesting it was his call that help seal the win for us, glad the coaches were listening. Hope they can get a deal done and run it back next year.
