The 33rd Team: Coaches on the Hot Seat

The first one's not exactly a mystery, though even less so given that they put his picture in the tweet.

This happens so much that Rhule has virtually become the face of the NFL Hot Seat.

What's a little surprising is that the article only lists three names total, with the others also having some level of familiarity to us here on The Huddle.

Number Two is our old buddy Ron Rivera, currently of the embattled Washington Commanders. Seems a tad early in my mind to be putting him there, but given the organization he's part of I suppose it can be understood..

The third is Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, perhaps more properly referred to as the assistant head coach since Jerry Jones is always the true head coach...and GM... and...whatever. Not that working for Jerry Jones is ever a very secure position, but these days there's loads of speculation that McCarthy is just keeping the seat warm for Sean Payton.

As to Rhule, the article acknowledges that he has a history of guiding college programs to better standing but calls rebuilding the Panthers "a much harder task".

Excerpt:

He has a 10-23 record in his first two years with the team. Some of the blame can fall on major injuries and certain personnel decisions, but Rhule is still responsible for winning games at the end of the day.

Rhule has also dealt with an endless carousel of quarterbacks during his tenure paired, and Christian McCaffrey only playing in 10 games the past two years doesn’t help either. A healthy McCaffrey and consistent quarterback play could have Rhule back on stable ground in no time or another year filled with injuries and losses could put Rhule on the hot seat this season.

Truthfully, I find it a little disingenuous to blame some of Rhule's issues on "certain personnel decisions" when it's well known that he has final say on those.

Land the "carousel of quarterbacks? Yeah...also pretty much him 😕

Rhule will get a 4th year. Tepper said as much in his presser, unless he was flat out lying. He even said he may give him 5 regardless of record.  I am just not buying he's in any danger of losing his job this season or anytime soon.

Tapper also said Marty Hurney was one of the best evaluators of college talent in the league and even specifically stated that he "didn't want to lose him" before firing him around a year later.

I've come to a pretty clear understanding that the public speaking version of David Tepper rarely knows what he's talking about, quite commonly says things without thinking and is pretty frequently full of sh-t.

I hope rule is fired before the season starts.

If it wasn't so early I would drink to that statement.  I'll drink 2 this evening.

Despite the documented ridiculousness of the deal that was given Rhule, and Tepper's continued support for his coach, I do believe he could be shown the door this season if there is obvious regression by the team, and/or Rhule completely loses the team, and players are doing their own thing, ignoring coaching, and mailing it in after the 1st quarter etc. Can't have that happening, ego and hubris be damned.

Thanks for the post on this. More than anything, I'm really beginning to like the 33rd Team -- good takes without the call-in-talkshow kind of reporting.

And yeah, I think they went a little light on Rhule. They did remind us of the reputation that brought him here, but were also smart enough to remind us that this isn't Kansas (or Waco, TX) anymore, Toto.

I hope he can pull off the miracle season and that the last two were just the adjustment period. If he is going to be the magician, though, he's got to know he's no longer playing Indian Reservation casino lounges and he's now center stage on Penn & Teller's Fool Us.

I'm of that same mindset.  Every individual statement I have seen attributed to Tepper, and the totality of everything he has said on the subject tells me that barring a complete collapse and looking lost (again) at what is happening before his very eyes,

Tepper didn't buy Rhule, he bought what Rhule was selling: "the process."  As such, he needs to come to the conclusion the process is failing or a is just a dead end. The idea that "the process" may work very well in places like Temple or Baylor, or it might even work a the more juggernaut schools, but not at all in the NFL has not dawned on him.

As for Ron and McCarthy, those seats are hot constantly.  The Foreskins are a complete debacle of an organization starting at the top.  As for the Cowboys, Jerrah has not come to terms with the overwhelming fact that his team has not sniffed a shot at a Superb Bowl since JJ's roster left and rebuilding that is beyond him.  The problem with both of those places is not who is wearing the HC headset, it is what looks back at the owner when he looks in the mirror every morning.  Neither Jerrah nor Snyder can admit that.

People under Jones were the ones who convinced him to hand things over to Bill Parcells back in the early 2000s.

It was a smart move on their part, but it ended up backfiring.

When Parcells failed to deliver a Super Bowl, Jones took that to mean that his way was just as good as anyone else's. He felt justified in going back to running things just like he had before Parcells came aboard.

It's really hard to fight that kind of narcissism.

But he didn't double down on Hurney like he's done with Rhule.  He's either lying or he's seriously going to give him 4 season's and quite possibly 5 to get this right.  Not my words but Teppers.

    • I suppose it depends on what you mean as 'elite'. I typically mean someone that can play with lower level pieces around them and still win. There are very few of those.
    • It would obviously be incredible if Brooks came back and just ran away with the job on his opportunities like Rico Dowdle did last year. But any Panthers fan that has been around the block knows better than to go ahead and make plans for that. Brooks has missed a ton of not just playing time but meaningful early career growth in a league that has increasingly devalued the position from an investment standpoint beyond one or two superstars. There's really not any comparison to look back on that lines up with the current iteration of the league at least not favorably. The key thing that this RB room has going for them is our investment in the OL. The highest paid OL in the league two years in a row paired with our staff should make it easier for just about any RB to get into open running lanes. But that is also anything but a given considering our OL was largely middle of the pack last year. In the end it might all be a moot point anyways if we again struggle to establish a viable passing attack.
    • I don't have him making the team and I think same goes for the staff, but they are hopeful for a PS spot.    I mean of course I'd like 3 all-world at RB and every spot, just doesn't work that why. Panthers normally carry 3. dan always talk up Etienne, even called him a future star.....I think Brooks will be fine as a 2 with health pls.....  Chubba can carry a seasons load as lead dawg.    Its fine, I mean backup OGs or CB is much higher on my worry scale(Id even put QB room as worse than RB room too...)
