that’s means you have to play the starters the entire time Sam and Baker would be competing? Who wants that?  It would double up the time you play our starters in a meaningless preseason game 1.    It’s not a comp if one is with the 1s and one is with the 2s the next series.

You only get 3 preseason games and you are building a new line. The starters need work too. It isn't like anyone except Moton is a starter on the line.

To me, the temperaments of the 2 individuals is a huge factor.  Sam is quiet and reserved, and he does not seem too bothered by his lack of success or the signing of Baker.  Baker is more of an Alpha, and I do not think he would settle for a backup role.  I think Sam is more willing to accept that role.  Of course, this is only important if they were equal in talent.

When there were 4 preseason games….how many did you actually see the starters get any real work?   Wasn’t largely a half in game 3 and maybe a series in game 2?  I’m not looking for more than that.

already know Baker is better.   I don’t want to see our starters playing multiple series in preseason game 1.

I think Rhule let’s it be the PJ show personally.  Does him a solid and let’s him audition to get picked up elsewhere in game 1.  I didn’t take his answer after actually watching him say it that he was really looking to play Sam/Baker.    Seemed like textbook Rhule of just trying to avoid giving the media the actual answer early in the week.  Which was basically his thing last camp.  He gets all weird when he tries to play that game.

think Rhule is planning on the Patriots game to be the game he plays/auditions the QBs.   He trots them out for one game.  Which is all he did last year with his starters.

I agree, the loss of one game isn't a big deal.  For that matter, I think people tend to over estimate the importance of preseason games in general. Baker will get a drive or two the first game, maybe three the second game and a few more the third game.  What happens in traing camp will be more important.

Fwiw, assuming Mayfield is the starter, I think they will keep it simple at first and work in more things as the season rolls along.

Would Darnold not have had the playbook that whole time though? He participated in OTAs and had over a month head start on studying the playbook. I'd say he should've had a leg up on knowing the offense better. And whether that's the case or not, those aren't "facts" that Simms can be wrong on. It's subjective and none of us have any idea how well either of those guys know the offense.

It's really a side issue too. But that being said, Simms isn't the only NFL person who has said that Darnold should have a sizeable lead in his knowledge of the playbook.

On an off note, Mayfield is believed to have a photographic memory, though I don't know if it's ever been confirmed.

The loss of a preseason game doesn’t impact the top of the roster.  They weren’t playing anyway.    You largely only saw them twice in the preseason with 4 games.   And that was a team being more on the risky side. Why play starters in 3 now.

only exception I have is for rookies or bad players.   I think you could throw Icky out there to get some work.  Thought Darnold should of been out there all last preseason.   I don’t want vets that can actually play being thrown out there for 3 preseason games.   1 is good enough for them.  DJ Moore doesn’t need to be out there for 3 games. Same for Moton and everyone else that is legit.

Personally, I think the reps issue is not that big of a deal.  It wasn't last year.  In fact, Darnold looked decent while sharing time in tc/preseason.  The issues came when he got into his 4th and 5th games.

I'm pretty sure Joe Brady only had 10 plays in his playbook. McAdoo's playbook is like one of those restaurant menus where you have like 200 combinations of what to order

Dammit, now I am hungry.  😀

If he is a good offensive coach, then he will tone it down to start the season, and add more as the season goes along.
