Rivera fires Sam Mills III

Mills probably walked by Danny Boy's office late one night when he was transferring money from the Foreskins account to his personal Cayman Islands account, through several other accounts.  Fearing Mills knew too much, he had to go.

That would qualify as a philosophical difference.

And worked with the elder Mills...

Throw in too that Mills III made the choice to follow Rivera to Washington.

I'll say it again. I really want to know the details of this story.

Same.  Definitely seems out of character for Rivera.

My bet is that Mills did something stupid and Ron had no choice. Mills did some bizarre things while he was living in CLT.

Rivera wasn't exactly immune from doing stupid things.

Worth remembering he's the reason Marty Hurney has a high level job with the Commanders.

they got a preseason game this weekend.  Camp is going on.  Wonder if Sam Mills Jr was missing time for the HOF stuff.

I mean, right or wrong, Ron seems like a show up guy given how he went about his battle with cancer.  Just speculating.  Wonder what the difference in opinion was on.  Doesn't have to be coaching style.

I haven't seen enough to get any sort of read on whether this was the right decision or not.

From what I've heard, people do feel like the defensive line underperformed last year. Is that primarily on Mills? Don't know.

With that said, it's kind of hard to defer to the guy who put massive amounts of trust in Mike Shula, Richard Rodgers and Eric Washington while telling Ken Dorsey to dial it back and just be Cam Newton's "buddy".

It is.

Throw in also that staff decisions were never exactly Rivera's strong suit (remember how long he held on to Eric Washington as his DC).

It's possible that Mills wasn't up to being a position coach. Don't know. Again, this is one of those things where I'd like to know more details.

He said difference of opinion. It's likely like Mills seriously challenged Rivera on something or just blatantly disregarded an instruction regarding how to run something.

    • Rags lost again. All is right in the hockey world.
    • He’s responsible for two drafts classes. The first was one of the worst drafts I’ve ever seem. The second one is showing a ton of promise. I’m somewhere between skeptical and hopeful on Morgan.
    • I'm a big fan of Dan. His ability to find productive players deep in the draft will pay off.  I'm going to give him 1.5 draft classes right now, because I do think it's a little unfair to evaluate his first year when he got the job in January, especially when we went into that draft not having a first round pick.  XL and Brooks are still big time TBD players. Both still have incredibly high ceilings, but both have also given us legitimate reasons to have a lot of pause. Trevin Wallace, Chau Smith Wade and Jatavion Sanders have IMO outplayed their draft position early in their careers. That's a great thing. He also got Coker and Demani Richardson as UDFAs that year. Given the situation we were in, I really don't mind the gamble on the high ceiling guys. Still may work out, still may not, but if you made a checklist of ideal situation for an NFL GM to walk into, ours was near the bottom of that list.  Every single 2025 pick is contributing in some way. That typically doesn't happen. I am absolutely blown away by this draft class 6 games in. Even the best GM's miss on occasion, and we can't expect Dan to be 100% on drafts moving forward. Ryan Fitzgerald was an excellent find as well.  Comparing our last two drafts to the previous few is pretty shocking. Can you imagine this season without our Rookies? It would not be good. Additionally, this roster only has 6 players with more than 6 years of experience, and two of those are specialist.  The next step is equally important, and still very much TBD. We have to avoid Cap Chaos.
