Mike Kaye, Observer comment on Wilks support

The Charlotte Observer reported in November that Wilks has internal support within the organization. That support hasn’t wavered, as the Panthers have won three of their past five games.

Despite that backing, Wilks will need to endure the rigors of a coaching search in Carolina.

The Panthers, like all other teams, need to comply with the Rooney Rule, which prioritizes external minority candidacy. Carolina will need to interview two external minority candidates before making a permanent hire or taking the interim tag off Wilks’ title.

While Wilks is a minority candidate, under the Rooney Rule he is considered an internal option.

The search could also take some time, as coaches in the playoffs can’t be interviewed for jobs until after the wild-card round of the postseason.

If the Panthers want to have multiple interviews with a candidate who makes it all the way to the Super Bowl, the hiring process could extend beyond January into mid-February. That timeline would push a final hire date past the major college all-star games in early February.

Regardless of reality, I would expect this to be the message from the organization as long as we're still in contention for the playoffs.

The very Panther thing to do is:

beat Detroit. Lose to New Orleans

That way, screw draft position and playoffs at the same time and still Hire Wilks

the lions defense is susceptible to the run

a veritable trifecta of Panther fandom

My panthers fandom fully expects us to control our own destiny, be slated for the playoffs, then lose the final game a blow it 😂

I think Wilks has been coaching a "the cupboard is bare" team and has been exceeding what could be expected of him. He was asked to pilot the wreckage of the Rhule regime AND to absorb the loss of CMC in the process.

What has he done? He's given us some good games and we've lost some games pretty badly, too. We were going to lose those games no matter what, this wasn't a very good team -- there are massive holes at QB, TE, LB and DE. There's no depth and a real case can be made that coaching has had to make up for a wasted off season and first quarter of this season from HC to OC to DC. Special teams coaching seems to be pretty decent, but man we are desperately in need of a better strength and conditioning staff, and possibly trainers as well.

When evaluating Wilks, overall team win/loss performance might not be as accurate as looking at what has been done with what we have on hand. And there's that empty cupboard. In many ways it is like evaluating QBs for the draft. Everyone wants to take a big name winner from a big name program that is always at the top of the rankings. It's the surest bet, right? Honestly, the best candidate for that QB spot is the QB who came in and turned a middling program into a winner, one where he had to elevate the entire team with his performance. That's a guy who can turn around a bad team. The same can be found for HCs.

Wilks may well be one of those guys, but he may not be the only one like that out there. Sean McDermott was one of those guys back when he came to Carolina out of Philadelphia. And when he left after our Super Bowl run because he completely elevated our defense, he showed he could build a team from the ground up.

Maybe Wilks is the guy for us, he certainly understands the Keep Pounding mantra. But maybe there's a guy out there who is better (perhaps in Philly). It's hard to say but I think we'd be foolish not to keep Wilks as a solid candidate (barring a complete meltdown by the team in the next few weeks).

Im still not sold on Wilks.  Like the guy, and the players seem to want to go to war for him, however I am not convinced that there isnt a better, more innovative candidate out there.  Regardless, the first thing that needs to happen is Ben McAdoo needs to be shitcanned the second the last game of the season is over.  We have some of the worst, most uninspired playcalls in the entire NFL.  Ben McAdoo is a chump.

    • Would Morgan or Beason have been HOFers' if injuries hadn't derailed their careers?  I was not a close watcher of the game when Morgan was in his prime but I thought Beason had a few seasons at close to Lukes' level of play.
    • Franchise QBs feast when things are rolling and the tide that raises boats when things are going sideways.  Bryce isn't that. He's a complimentary player, that's it.  When the defense and STs are on point, he plays loose and it shows.  When we are in a dog fight and things haven't gone our way, he struggles.  It's that simple. He's not a horrible QB, but he's not top tier either.  So the question begs, is this worthy of a second contract?  The answer should be no.  It definitely is my answer. Bryce will never be a QB that can produce wins largely on his arm.  That's a FRANCHISE QB, any other QB is simply a placeholder at the starter's position until that guy can be found.   At some point the excuses of lack of weapons will be a straw man.  Heck, it's nearly there now.  I mean if he doesn't look even better than last year will we blame it on the TE position?  'Well if Bryce only had a player like Kelce, Kittle or Gronk on this team...'  Are we really going to do that?
    • When I arrived at college, I was 18, not too much younger than some of these draft picks.  It was not a huge school, but there were guys on the team who were 21, 22, 23....playing ahead of me.  I was seventh on the depth chart.  Those guys have been through a few seasons, were stronger, more knowledgeable.  I was a better raw player than some of them, but those other factors matter.  As I grew stronger, more familiar with the playbook, and learned what it was like to play in college, I gradually improved and with that, I rose up the depth chart.  It took most of my freshman year for the light to come on.  Had the coach thrown me into the starting lineup day 1, I would have probably failed.    And that was college.  So I agree with you based on my experience on a much lower level.  Frankly, I think that is why so many kids drafted to fill huge gaps bust.  The teams are desperate.  Anyone who looks to fill vacancies in the starting lineup through the draft is desperate.  You draft depth to develop.  For this reason, I say, "Let Walker start for a while."  Maybe Brazzell can be our WR 4.  Throw Hunter into a rotation and ask him to do one or two things.  Freeling needs some strength and he needs to work on run blocking.
