Can Sam Darnold play himself into becoming the 2023 starter?

Sam Darnold in 2022...

QBR: 57.5 (12th - just behind Lamar and ahead of Herbert)

If he (and team) performed the whole season the same as in games he wasn't injured:

3,740 Passing Yards (10th)

31 Total TDs - 24 Pass/7 Rush - (Tied for 9th in Pass TD)

3 or 4 INTs

Panthers would be 10-7, division champs, and headed to the playoffs.

 

We might have an opportunity to sign a mid-level starter to a 2-3 year backup  $ contract.

I posted a similar breakdown but one thing to keep in mind is that's assuming he plays at this level across a season. I like him a lot as a backup/ bridge and I am skeptical of that.

one of the reasons I do not want Wilks back. I know a new coach is going to make a play for a new qb.

I'm good with having him back as a backup.

A backup is a guy who can do fine for you in spot duty, but who gets exposed beyond that. That's Darnold, just like it was Derek Anderson. It's good work and there's no shame in it, but once you're getting to five or six Darnold starts, there's a real crapper incoming.

I hope not…if I’m the Panthers, I’m 50/50 on bringing Darnold back and I spend the last game of the season letting him loose in the pass game to help me make that decision.

Just a gut feeling. I don't have anything against him. And it's not all him -- I place very, very little blame at his shoulders from Sunday. I think you'll see quite a few guys not taking it seriously and when that happens, it impacts others' performances.

The question is, if the Panthers are not in position to sign, draft or trade for a franchise quarterback this offseason.

Do they give Darnold a relatively cheap one-year prove-it deal? Or have they already seen enough from his past performances to let him go?

      Grading the Panthers' 2026 Draft Class

      Maybe a bit of a homer take but I can't give us a grade lower than A.   Freeling was arguably the best LT prospect in the draft.  His athletic ability is off the chart and at 6'7" that can move.  It was a no brainer pick.   Hunter's key word is Violence. Putting him next to Brown should scare an offensive coordinator. These two give Scourton and Phillips plenty of chances to get one on one opportunities. Brazzell, another tall receiver with sprinter speed.  Our WR room is filled with tall talented WR.  Brazzell is going to give us a WR that can take to roof off the defense.  Basically Jimmy Horn with size. W. Lee III has a nickname of the Blanket. (heard this on the Beleav podcast with J. Stewart)  What a great name.  A great value in the 5th round. Hecht A strong, fast and extremely smart center. Many had him listed as the best center in the draft.  He's most likely a starter sooner than later. Wheatley A good safety in round 5.  Someone who could see playing time.   Kuwatch  I love this pick.  At minimum he will be a key piece on special teams and with some good coaching he'll see some packages where he'll play.  His down piece is he doesn't stay up in the running game.  Good coaching will fix this.  He reminds me a bit of A.J. Klein.   All these picks were great value.  I believe everyone of them were graded higher than the pick we took them.   Dan Morgan is IMO doing a great job turning this team into a good team with great depth.

      Sure, that is possible. That’s what, an extra 55 yards a game on average and 7 more TDs? What if he’s just 15th?  I imagine they would extend him in that situation due to the belief that he’ll keep trending up. maybe a 3 year contract to prove he can be top 10? Sounds like a Tepper plan.
