If he is as great as everyone thinks he could make Darnold a top 15 quarterback and build the roster.

This would be understandable if he felt like he had something to prove but what does Harbaugh have to prove coming back into the league besides winning a championship? He already showed he could win games with average QB play. You think he would want a guy with elite potential if he came back.

I don’t get the 5 year comments about Harbaugh. He was fired from the Niners, he didn’t just walk away and decide to coach at Michigan. His career was all upward moves until then. QB coach in the NFL, HC for smaller school in San Diego, HC for major conference school at Stanford, and HC in the NFL Niners. He was fired and took another big college job where he has been the past 7-8 years. He wants back in the NFL where he belongs.

Hell Doug Pederson was fired from the Eagles after only 5 years. Is anyone worried about him being a short term coach?

Taken from various poster's comments about him either tiring of the job or wearing out his welcome.

It seems to be a common expectation, though most who've said it don't seem to have an issue with it.

I guess I don’t see it. The Niners front office was a poo show. Aside from that everything else was an upward promotion and you can’t fault a person for that.

I could definitely see him wearing out his welcome. Already happened once. The other is someone else's hypothetical.

Not only that, Steichen could flame out just as much as any coach. Why deal in hypotheticals? If a crap shoot it is, give me the guy who's actually proven something as a head coach in the NFL.

The entire discussion is hypothetical.

If he “wore out his welcome” in San Fran then Pederson did the same with the Eagles (only 4-5 years and won a Super Bowl) and Reich did the same with the Colts with much less success. As long as the same people pushing this narrative didn’t want Pederson and don’t want Reich, I guess it can make some sense?

Harbaugh wore out his welcome with his players (similar to Gruden, but faster).

Pederson wore out his welcome with Jeffrey Lurie, Reich with Otis the town drunk.

The players may or may not be true. Is there any specific players saying this or just a bunch of sources to help justify his firing?

Here are several articles stating Eagles players had issues with Pederson benching starters that last game. Seems they were over his antics as well. Miles Sanders is actually named in one.

Players did get pissed at Pederson for that final game, and rightly so. But the problems that led up to that were pretty thoroughly documented by Eagles writer Jeff McLane. Basically, Lurie wants to be the head coach/GM/ etc. Howie Roseman is okay with it. Pederson, not so much.

AS to Harbaugh:

Niners veterans still grumbling about Jim Harbaugh

Deion Sanders says 49er players want Jim Harbaugh out

This stuff was happening despite their winning record, so it wasn't a "winning cures all" sort of thing.

Nothing is a smart move unless it works out, of course.

But let's say you take Harbaugh, and in doing so bypass a guy like Shane Steichen.

Harbaugh has the kind of decent four or five year stint that many people here are talking about, then leaves because that's his shelf life. Maybe that includes a championship. Maybe it doesn't.

Meanwhile, Steichen goes on to coach for ten or more years somewhere else, maybe picking up a championship or two along the way or perhaps even just coaching his team to be a perennial contender.

In that case, how smart a move was it, really?

I know some people are okay with short, successful periods. I'm not.

I prefer someone who's in for the long haul.

If our next coach (whoever that is) gets us a Ring, it was the right hire.

    • Yeah one big factor has been he is surprisingly quite durable. But the reality of that aspect is much of it boils down to plain dumb luck more often than not. Big guys get hurt smaller guys get hurt it happens across the league to anyone to varying degrees. The issue is we are staring down the barrel of a possible top 10 QB salary and Bryce Young is one of the least physically gifted starters in the league. That is not a shot at him it is simply a rational acknowledgment of circumstances. There is a legitimate question to be asked if his window as a starter in this league is smaller as a result because what is going to happen when those hits that he has previously popped right back up from with a smile on his face begin to accumulate as they do for every player that has been in this league? These are just things to consider.
    • This game is a must-win for both teams I feel. For the Canes, you don’t want to go back to Vegas and put them in front of their home crowd with a chance to close out the series. For Vegas, if you drop this game your only chance is to win 2 straight and similarly have to contend with an energized Canes home crowd if you get to a game 7.
