New QB specific helmets for better protection of head hits this season

“This past year we had an increase in the number of quarterback concussions, and it was the same helmet-to-ground dynamic. Many people would say it’s because quarterbacks are scrambling more often, but we didn’t see that. It was still the quarterback in the pocket, getting hit and the head hitting the ground as they were holding onto the ball.”

Looks like the timing is right for getting a QB that everyone is worried about getting his little head bounced around.

If these helmets are somehow better, why doesn't everyone wear them?

First, this is a new helmet so it doesn't have a reputation, which it needs because it isn't a mandatory helmet. Players have options and they usually stick with what they are familiar with.

The league has done a lot of studies on helmets and has been in the process of forcing upgrades in design and prohibiting ones that aren't deemed safe by the constantly changing standards.

This company is planning on designing helmets specific for different positions based on the situations each finds themselves in and the types of hits they are likely to encounter. Apparently the next one is for WRs and CBs to help with the full speed impacts they face, contrasted with the QB helmets that are designed to absorb impacts from giant linemen.

Tldr: not everyone is going to wear them because they have a choice, it's new, and it's not designed for everyone.

The Tua helmet?

I mean, are they basically just saying the quiet part out loud here? We're gonna protect our high dollar QBs, the rest of y'all go out there and take your brain damage.

The article said they are going to be developing helmets for other position groups too based on the types of impact they are likely to encounter.

So one player bangs their head one way, and another bangs their head another way.  Sounds like a bunch of BS to me.

    • When I say "average NFL WR", for me, that's comparing him to all WRs in the league during that season/span of time.  He was of course better than those #4-6 WR's that can't even get on the field, but talent/ability wise, he probably wasn't any better than a #3 WR for most NFL teams, he just happened to be on one of the teams in 2019 with even worse WR's so he put up solid stats for the season. Here's more or less how I'm looking at it. Take T-Mac right now and Chark at his best, put them on every NFL team at this very moment, and where would they fall on the depth chart come Week 1 (basically, the teams that don't put the rookies at #1 to "make them earn it in camp" don't count, it's projecting week 1 depth charts). T-Mac would be at worst the #2 WR on the majority of teams this season, (hell, he's likely our #1 at this very moment right now already), peak Chark would not.  Yes, T-Mac still has to prove himself at this level, but his current ability, even as a rookie who hasn't played a snap yet, would have him above Chark on any team's week 1 depth chart. Because again, you can't just fall back on "well Chark had a 1,000 yard season" and use that as the reason for having him above T-Mac.  As he didn't have that 1k yards because he was a beast, it was because he was the only halfway decent receiving option on a bad team that was always losing and passing the ball (the Jags had the 7th worst scoring differential that season).
    • We clearly need to add a veteran stopgap at safety one way or the other.
    • On Panther's Wire too. No idea, just found it and trying to share. https://pantherswire.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/panthers/2025/06/15/nfl-free-agency-rumors-panthers-eagles-justin-simmons/84219881007/
