Canes vs Panthers Pre Talk

Recommended Posts

Biggest two obstacles

1) Bob, as we all know.

2) Florida's defensive zone. If our forecheck falters, they can swing momentum. They're not as dangerous as we are in transition, but they get the puck out quick. Could be irritating for us, and we know what we look like when we get irritated thanks to the Devils.

I really thought Toronto out played them the last two games.  I would have liked to see the Lafs take them to at least 6 games but they really got screwed on the no goal call.  Either way, I thought the Leafs out performed the Panthers the last two games which gives me some optimism.  I'm not sure what to make of it, this is a series where having Svech would be very nice.  I think our team is grittier, and has better depth scoring, but I think the Panthers have a few higher end players right now.  Ultimately our team isn't goind to back down.

I think the zebras are going to have a lot to do with the outcome of this series.  We have to find our power play this series or it's going to be tough sledding.

One thing the Canes will have to be ready for is the Panthers dirty play- targeting, head hits, stick grabs near the end of the game when the refs won’t call it, etc. They make the Islanders look like boy scouts.

Panthers coach Paul Maurice brought this “style” to Florida with him from his time with the Jets. Names to watch - hit man Sam Bennett, and Matthew Tkatchuk.

Canes have to be aware while sticking to their game. Here are just a couple of Bennetts dirt, he had lots more.

Wouldn't it be nice to be in a position to put Pool Party on the ice with the sole mission of taking out Bennett, just like the old days when teams had hired enforcers?

Bennett has been called an “enforcer” by some but that’s being too generous, he isn’t paying back for anything he just targets players to try to take them out of the game or interrupt a play with dirty hits etc.

Series winning goal was definitely a penalty on Gudas. They aren’t afraid to play this kind of dirty either.

Staal vs Staal and Staal.

Big Staal vs Lesser Staals.

No matter what happens this series, the next Staal family dinner is going to be interesting

And just imagine playing your sibling in in the playoffs, knowing for you to succeed you have to crush your brothers dreams

    • I wonder if they'd consider trading Rasheed Walker to a team that needs tackle help but missed out in the draft?
    • LOL. This is such a Panthers fan take.  Anyone who falls to us must suck because some other team didn't take them before.  We got lucky with Lemon, Thieneman, and Freeling all falling to us (honestly any of the three is a A+) but the WR and S positions are much deeper than the LT position in this draft.  We got the LT w/ the most upside at 19.  Mauigoa played RT in college and some think he is a guard in the nfl.  Spano played RT in college and some think he is a guard in the NFL due to short arms.  Blake Miller played RT in college and is not as good as Freeling.  Proctor is a true LT but his ability to handle quick edge's worries me (see Icky).  Freeling is a true LT and a gifted pass protector.  Many think he has a very high ceiling and will benefit from not having to start right away.  This is how you build a franchise.
    • After watching Cam get killed for years behind a bad Oline and having to watch the 2021 and 2023 Olines I will never complain about this team putting resources into that spot.  We got a true LT who could really push Rasheed Walker for the day 1 job. Go back and watch Iceky's draft profile from 2022 and all the talk was Ickey would be an all-pro guard in a zone blocking scheme, but he could play LT in a gap power run scheme. That's why Ickey looked really good when Wilks took over and we just started running gap run plays and just mauled people up front but under Canales we've been more of a zone running team. Ickey can survive at LT with his pass blocking but his true strength will always be his ability to just move guys in the run game and that's a skill set that's better used at guard.  Take another OT later on day 3 to learn from Moton to take over RT in a couple of years and let Walker and Freeling battle it out for the day 1 LT job then next offseason trade one of Hunt of Lewis and let Ickey move inside to guard.
