Some positive and critical thoughts on yesterdays game

You have to put some context on that too.

It's not like we were world users. Hell, the one truly good team we faced absolutely drubbed us.

Bill Parcells quotes aside, the Panthers weren't necessarily as good as our final record made some believe.

Right, but the most pro-ready QB and all star coaching staff shouldn’t start out the year like that IMHO. Rhule and Wilks had no trouble with Atlanta for 3 years.

No one was tempering anything until we looked a bit lost (starter wise) in preseason.

...have still only been together for a few months and were only playing their first game. Meanwhile, most of the teams they'll be facing our building on what they already had (Atlanta included).

Companies can put their products through hundreds of tests in a laboratory but it's not until you have a million random people trying to do a billion different things with it that you really know how good it is.

Remember how the lesson of the preseason was that our O-line was terrible?

There are things you just don't know until the live bullets start flying. Hell, we still don't know how good our team will or won't be.

You just have to be patient.

It is what it is.  2 ints and a fumble cost us the game.

Bryce looked good at points and horrible at other points. As for the deep threat, when we did have the db beat deep, Young over threw it by a large margin.   Complete one of those and they will take it seriously, even without Byrd or Chark. We also saw miscommunication between QB and WR multiple times in a game, again.  Hopefully that doesn't take 8 games to clean up.

I'm a Bryce fan, but I'm not polishing this turd.  He laid an egg in this one.   Hopefully he'll bounce back.

Yard per play definitely impact the game more than penalties. Turnovers are huge, but that’s not what I was saying. What I was saying is that due to the turnovers we looked like we controlled that game more with TOP and yardage. Looking at efficiency, they ran the ball and passes the ball better than us and had no turnovers. I might lean on the fact that that means they played better hence the 14 point win. Looking at the stats, I can’t say we were definitely the best team outside of turnovers.

They had .7 yds per play more than we did, that one long pass to Pitts gave them that advantage. I mean seriously, when was the last time you heard a coach at a press conference talk about cleaning up yards per play?

SMH, let’s start cherry picking. It’s a stat and that long pass happened. It shows efficiency across the entire game. I was just trying to point out that it’s homerism that immediately says oh, we were better and we lost because of turnovers. We lost by 14 and the Falcons moved the ball on us, especially in the second half. If we had to punt instead of getting intercepted, probably doesn’t make a difference.

Also, the thing about the press conference is dumb. Coaches will absolutely say they have to clean up their run defense if they gave up 5 ypc like we did but they won’t mention the stat itself. Doesn’t mean the stat is meaningless.

What you just outlined is why our preseason plan made no sense. Pretty sure you were one of the folks saying we were vanilla so don’t worry, we have to hide things from Atlanta and NO the first two weeks. That doesn’t jive with the it’s our first game and we’ve been barely playing together. If you know it’s going to take a while to get, why did we limit snaps and plays in preseason? Why wouldn’t you get all the live/bullets flying reps you can get?

I agree that it looked like we needed more time based on how we played. That’s why I think we did ourselves a disservice by being vanilla and limiting snaps. It certainly didn’t confuse or surprise Atlanta and I doubt it will surprise NO either. I know I posted my thoughts that who cares about hiding stuff, get all the live reps you can because I sure knew we weren’t competing this year.

I was one of the people talking about it being preseason, but not so much about hiding things.

You'll find me saying I didn't have much in the way of expectations going into this season, and I still don't.

Winning isn't what this season is about. It's about laying a foundation to win in the future.

I thought we could beat the Falcons and honestly we were the better team.  We just beat ourselves.  I know what you are saying though this will be a year of growth and learning.

roughly half the board was tempering things.

There have always been essentially two groups

Group A - we have an all star staff and should compete for a playoff spot crowd.  That starts most convos off with a game away last year and we just add on to that narrative.

Group B - this is a rebuild, rookie QB, new coaches, new schemes, meh skill talent on O and you shouldn't expect much winning this year crowd.  It's about developing Bryce and how he looks down the stretch.

Agree with most of the summary. Only exception is that if the Falcons understood we couldn't go deep, then we should have known as well.  If BY is an elite processor, would he not have picked up on that - at least after he thre the first interception?

When I say the Jets DB get 3 picks, my first thought was I was glad our QB learned after 2 by the same guy. Difference was the Jets DB picked his in some variety of settings - Bryce threw almost identical INT.

I think much of group A is who started the tempering expectations after the Jets and Giants preseason games.

whats nuts is that 85% of the board predicted we would beat atlanta.  Then the same posters were saying calm down bryce is a rookie, now those same posters are predicting a win against the saints.  Its crazy.

We will take our lumps this year, maybe win 7 games and then position ourselves into the conversation in 2024

I mean what’s wrong with that? Isnt that just the circle of life for a fan? I feel like I’ve seen 100s of parodies of people being like “this is our year” when they are a fan of an all time horrible team. It’s just the nature of beast.

As on record, I didn’t think we’d beat the falcons. However, I really hoped we would and woke up Sunday morning feeling like it could happen.  then bummed when we lost. Now im excited about playing the saints at home on national tv.

That’s the life of a fan.
