Statue For Jake Delhomme

I dont think too much that he was a bad QB but he just wasnt a good one. For the last 3-4 seasons he played he seemed to try to force way to many throws that only Peyton Manning would be able to make and thats what killed him, so the thought of putting up a statue is probably the dumbest thing I've ever heard, sorry man

You forget Sam Mills was also a GREAT LB coach for us after he played here, and he did soo much in the community before he died. You could also make a case for Minter being there, but not Jake. EVER. It's not about hating him, I like him as a person, and would love to see him come back here in some capacity, like the local radio station. He is not, however, deserving of a statue.

I'll put it this way- we've had 3 real true "franchise" type guys in our existence. Peppers, Smith, and Delhomme. Meaning those guys really defined the team. We never had any legitimate standouts before that. Out of those 3, only one has had a career free of any controversy. That's Delhomme. He's the only franchise quarterback we ever had really. And he's also involved in the community. Did tons of work for the Komen foundation.

My case for Delhomme would be he was the face of our franchise for 6 years. The stadium shook when he came out of the tunnel, he quarterbacked us to the playoffs 3 times, including a Super Bowl and NFC title game. In the mean time, perhaps the most futile season the team ever put together was when it was handed to David Carr in the absence of Delhomme. The very life essence was sucked out of the team when Jake went down. He came back, the team responded with a playoff appearance. The Panthers never won in spite of Delhomme. They won because of him. He didn't put up great numbers, but his presence on the field made the players around him overachieve.

Like I said, the 3 players in our history deserving of a statue are Kasay, Minter, and Delhomme. I would add Peppershit and Smith, but Peppershit was a dick his last two seasons, and Smith has that little itty bitty tendency to punch people in the face.

First he didn't win a superbowl for us. That would have helped. His stats were not the best in the league for a long period of time. That would have helped He was nearly the worst QB in the league for a year. That didn't help.

Jake had some spectacular years but I think we will have better QBs in the future.

Only if Jake can have a very confused look on his face while looking towards a statue of a double covered Smith with his hand raised like he's open.

I think I saw enough of Jake as a statue the past two years, thanks. How would they get the bronze football to stay in his hand?

    • Here's the thing. You compared him to Jake. Jake was signed to the practice squad out of college. Bryce was the number 1 overall. Their expectations are wildly different and so are their contracts. You can talk all you want about what a player is and where they are now and all this other mumbo jumbo, but Jake never had a 5th year option and we weren't talking about the possibility of a top 5 QB contract extension at the end of his 3rd year. What he was expected to be matters because we invested heavily at a cost of future capital, including a 2nd round pick this year, for him to be that guy. The cost to add Bryce took value from the team. To be worth it, he has to add that value back.  Actually, I don't prefer yards, TDs, or only INTs. All those stats by themselves are misleading which is why I said you have to use a lot of different stats. ADOT - Average depth of target.  Completion %. Pretty obvious until you factor in ADOT. 0-5 has a lot higher C% than 10-15%. Hang time. If a pass is in the air for 4.6 seconds vs 3.1 on a 40 yards throw, that gives a DB a lot of time to correct. Is it a loft or is it a laser.  EPA - Expected points added. A way of measuring QB efficiency on every play.  CPOE - ranking pass completions based on several factors, not just the throw.  There's obviously more, but those are the more common.  Typical stats don't show everything. You need to look all over. Looking at a stat line is lazy. That's why I said, you need to analyze everything. Once you start looking at the numbers you start looking at the player. That's why you follow numbers. They lead you places. You look at what happening when the numbers show you patterns. That's where you start finding the problems that yards, TDs and Ints won't show you.
    • It's not relevant who wins or loses. It's about actually attempting to get better at the position.
    • Thank you. I don't understand how the Bryce stans don't see this. I've never seen a player get more hyped for doing so little. Honestly it's driving me a little insane.
