Craig Carton of FOX Sports: Bryce Young is not an NFL quarterback and never will be

Well, that's not how I remembered it. At one point, the Texans, Bears, and Panthers were all communicating with each other on a deal. At the time, Chicago had the 1st pick, and Houston had the 2nd pick. Originally, the deal was that Houston would trade up to 1 (swapping places with Chicago), with the Panthers then trading with Chicago to get the 2. Many expected Houston to draft Bryce with the would-be 1st pick, but that's just a speculation. Nobody knows for sure if Houston had truly wanted Bryce. In any event, Houston backed out of the deal and decided to stick with 2, which then prompted Tepper to work out a new deal with Chicago to get their 1st pick. Now, at this point, many speculated that Houston would skip drafting a QB entirely and instead use the 2nd pick to draft Will Anderson. However, this speculation is based on the assumption that Houston believed the only QB worth drafting was Bryce, and that the price to trade up to 1 to draft him was not worth it. Again, this assumption is without evidence. Far more likely is that Houston found out Tepper and Fitt were dead set on Bryce, so instead of wasting capital to trade up to 1, Houston was happy to remain at 2 and take Stroud and still have enough capital left over to trade for 3 and draft Will Anderson Jr, which is exactly how Houston ended up with both the Offensive and Defensive Rookies of the Year. If Houston had really wanted Bryce over Stroud, they would have traded up to 1 and taken Bryce.

the way i read it wasn't houston backing out. they and the bears couldn't agree on what the texans would give the bears and just couldn't get thing s worked out. meanwhile the clock was ticking and the panthers offered something else and the bears jumped.

we both wanted young. we were willing to pay more for it. that's what it comes down to. stroud was a consolation prize that ended up being better than they or anyone else could have expected.

meanwhile young did worse than anyone thought possible, of course his situation was worse than anyone thought possible while the texans situation ended up being better than anyone expected.

or that the texans couldn't match the offer we were making the bears.

That's very clearly not what Tepper said. He said Houston changed its mind about trading up to 1, which then prompted him to pursue a separate deal for Chicago's 1st pick. Houston and us weren't simultaneously pursuing Chicago's 1st pick, so your interpretation is wrong.

Houston was clearly happy to stay at 2, knowing that it would likely result in picking Stroud. Now why is that? Could it be that they found out Tepper and Fitt was set on getting Bryce?

How would Houston know no one else would jump them for Stroud at 1. They “backed out” before we made the trade according to this story. If they were comfortable at 2 then they liked both players.

We screwed the pooch with this deal.....par for the course.

That's not what Tepper thinks though. He's still "confident" with picking Bryce, who according to him guarantees the best chance at winning "multiple super bowls".

Somebody pour a cold drink on Tepper's head.

Good point, and it's too late now. All hail Bryce the tank commander. Let's hope the little guy will get that 1st pick for us.

Certainly wasn’t you a year ago, was it? Can’t believe I was banned for a week for saying the poo that is now, contextually, very mild.

A year ago my stance was that the team had to pick the right qb no matter which one it turned out to be. It will always be my stance.

This all the way. Stroud worked out way better than anyone thought--including Houston.

This revisionist history on this board about Houston somehow being so much smarter than Carolina leading into the draft is just strange. The dumpster fire that we all see the Panthers as today? Yeah, Texans fans thought the same for their team this time last year. They wanted Cal McNair to sell the team. "They can't even tank right" was a common theme. No intellectually honest fan was thanking Lovie Smith for winning that last game. In fact, they all hated him because he cost them the chance to draft #1, which was for all intents and purposes was going to be Young, especially with an Alabama head coach and a front office well-connected to Alabama through Belichick, BOB, and Saban. We can talk ourselves out of it, but Houston got lucky before it got good.

Stroud (and to a much lesser extent, Anderson), makes them look like a model franchise to the Huddle, but all it proved is how quickly things can change for a team in 12 months if they take the luck that they're given.

People here love to pile on Bryce like every team but us knew he was going to bust ( Which I don't think he is BTW coaching, WR, Oline etc.. etc.. ) and didn't want him. If we took Stroud, Bryce was going #2. So....no matter how you spin it he was highly regarded and highly ranked. Posters here don't have some magic insight they seem to think. EVERYONE knew his size etc... and still had him up there on the board.
