Black Monday

Could not believe that I could not find a "Black Monday" thread except the one about Mayo.  I have some dirt that I love because I hate New Orleans--they stole our basketball team, they give us hurricanes, and they are stupid. And from Google Earth, New Orleans looks like the nation's twat.  For reference, Tampa Bay is just as bad about the hurricanes, but they did not steal our basketball team and they are more like a venereal wart on the nation's penis--big difference.  Sorry for the offensive metaphors--had to be said.

Now more facts with commentary:

  • Mayo out in New England.  While he was never a coordinator, could he be a candidate for the DC job here?
  • Vrabel to interview in New England.  This is very significant because before the Mayo firing, Vrabel was considered an option in New Orleans.  They wanted him BAAAD.
  • Jaguars fire Pederson.  He deserved it.
  • Giants to keep head coach (Daboll) and GM (Schoen)
  • Bengals fire Defensive Coordinator (Amarumo).

As much criticism we give Tepper for firing quickly, can you image the Giants fanbase hearing that Mara will keep Daboll and Schoen after that disaster of a season? Especially with them being on Hard knocks and letting Saquan walk because he isn't worth it and won't rush for 2000 yards. Schoen actually saved the Panthers from paying $28 mill per season for Brian Burn's 8 sacks.  I prefer an owner who knows that something isn't working and firing quickly than wasting time on something that isn't.

Mara has 2 Super Bowls to show for his ownership tenure, I think he deserves a pass despite how absurd it is to keep the crew from this year around. Tepper has a pair of 7 win seasons to show for his ownership in 7 years. But yeah I'd be pretty pissed if I was a Giants fan.

Amy word on Raheem Morris?  I am shocked he hasn’t gotten fired

I really like him as a coach/person, but man they were picked to run away with the division and finished below .500.

Raheem probably gets a reprieve because Penix seems to be a good qb.  The Falcons seem to be in the same boat as us, the offensive pieces are set, just need to upgrade the defense.

Well Morris is a defensive guy and Canales isn't so that's kinda a significant difference there. I'm glad they're keeping Morris around. He's got a decent size sample size as a HC at this point and just isn't very good. But the Falcons are kinda in limbo regardless of coach -- not sure I totally agree Penix will be good. He's been pretty underwhelming in his limited action except vs. us but we were literally the worst D in NFL history this year lol so I wouldn't read too much into that game. And even if Penix is ok, that Cousins deal and cap hit totally hamstrings them the next few years while he's on his rookie deal anyways. Just a stupid offseason from them last year, including keeping Morris as HC.

I said Penix seems to be.  He made some great plays.  He made some not so great ones.  To small of a sample size to be sure though.  But if I were a Falcon fan, I would be hopeful at least.

Did they keep Morris or was he a new hire?  I thought they hired him after firing Smith in Jan of last year.  Might be misremembering though.

  • Daboll is safe.
  • Stefanski is safe (or so they say)
  • Callahan should have been fired already but probably won't be.
  • Wouldn't be surprised if Pierce gets fired, but I think he did well enough to save his job at the end of year.

There are quite a few GMs that need fired, starting with Chris Ballard and Andrew Berry.

If I had to rank the current HC openings it would be:

1) Patriots- Promising young QB; FO that knows how to win; probably more adaptable to move on from "Patriot Way" than people think.

2) Jaguars- Talent on roster; easy division; nice weather; but have to deal with Baalke and Khan.

3) Bears- Ryan Poles is overrated; Chicago is almost as bad as NYJ.

5) Saints- Culture refuses to move on from 15 years ago; cap issues; stubborn GM.

6) Jets- More dysfunctional FO than Carolina

    • we are not talking about the 5th we are talking about bryce being one of if not the worst starter in the nfl for the past 3 years.  Dont move the goalposts my man
    • The issue is the position Bryce plays. Finding a good/great quarterback isn't easy. Plus, it sometimes takes years for these guys to actually become good/great. What you have to look for is progress instead of regression. Bryce has shown that. Can he put it all together? We don't know yet. But that's why you place a smaller bet with the 5th year option, and wait to see. You could be wrong and lose your 30 mil bet, but you didn't hitch your wagon long-term and lose much more.
    • Absolutely not. That’s too much for replacement level player. Bryce may be that. Or he may turn into something more. If you can’t see the flashes, you’re willfully blind. There’s more bad than good right now, but there’s less bad than there was earlier in his career. He’s only 24 and he’s showing signs of improvement. He may never become consistent enough to justify a long term contract, but he’s shown enough to roll the dice on what effectively will turn into a 2 year, $30MM contract for the next two years to see if he can earn something longer.    Sure, in his one season starting, Howell managed to throw for 3,946 yards and toss 21 TDs, but it took throwing the ball an astounding 612 times. He also threw 21 INTs (for a particularly egregious 3.4 INT%). For all the talk of him being a deep ball thrower, he still only averaged 6.4 YPA, with an average air yards of 5.6 yards per attempt. And for all the excuses of Washington’s line giving him no protection (65 sacks taken that year), he was only pressured on 22.7% of his dropbacks, which is a few percentage points lower than what Bryce has had to deal with each year (24.2, 26.7, and 24.0%).    These are all numbers that are at best roughly equivalent to Bryce’s production the past two years. It’s wild to me people can claim so confidently that he’s a better QB.
