Would You Trade Draft Capital for a #1 WR???

I keep seeing reports that the Panthers are hard on getting a top tier wr this off season. I wouldn't mind it I guess, but am I the only one who really wants to fo us on defense?

I also don't want to get back to fitterers ways of handing out draft picks like they're hot potatoes. Would you really be comfortable trading multi high picks for players like Garret Wilson or Tryeek Hill to get Bryce another weapon?

They spent a 2nd round pick on Mingo in 2023, a 1st. round pick on Legette in 2024.  You wanna spend another 1st or 2nd on a wr when our defense is historically atrocious?

Hence why I've been all in on the T-Mac train for over a year now, but doubt he falls to us at 8 unless he runs a slow 40, and maybe not even then.

In general I'd be okay with it, but not for any of those players.

First of all, Higgins, Godwin, and Allen are all FA's, so draft capital isn't in the equation.  Beyond that, Higgins is going to want Top 5 money if he were to come here, Allen is well past his prime at this point, and Godwin is coming off another injury and is about to turn 29 so he just doesn't make sense either to give big money to.

Tyreek would be a disaster of a situation here and he'd suck up most/all of our cap room to where we can't spend it on defense.  I'd rather use the cap on Higgins than Tyreek, but I'm still not okay with that because we need to use the cap on defensive players who will make more of an impact for us next year than defensive draft picks could.

Wilson would be the only player that would make sense to target, but I'm not giving up the 8th pick or our 1st rounder next year to then have to give him a huge deal, and I can't see the Jets trading him for anything less than a 1st.  

We'd be MUCH better off trading from 8 down to the 12-15 range and drafting Burden to have on a rookie deal and add other draft assets, than trading 8 for Wilson and then giving him a big new contract.

DK Metcalf is the player I wanted to target in a trade last offseason, and while I'd still like that idea in a vacuum, him and XL don't make for a great pairing as they're too similar.  So not sure I'd love giving up picks to give him a big contract and not be adding a different style WR to the team, even if he's obviously better than XL.

We are in bad need of some highly drafted defensive players. Giving away more high picks for offense when we just scored over 40 to end the season and still barely won the game would be mind boggling to me

Depending on how the draft falls the best shot of that is TMac, but I don't want us giving up capital this year, and anything close to a #1 would demand at least a first rounder.

I really wanted Garret Wilson but there's no way that happens without waaaaay too much sacrificed.

So first, you're not "giving away" picks to the offense when you're adding a guy who has legit Top 5 WR potential, you're adding a difference maker at one of the most important positions in today's game.

Second, is that your first sentence is just flat out incorrect.

We don't need highly drafted defensive players.  We need impact players and difference makers on the defensive side of the ball.  Those two things are not the same thing, it doesn't matter where you get them, whether it's in free agency or any round of the draft.

Defensive rookies take longer to make an impact in this league on average than offensive ones.  Even if we use the 1st pick on defense, with the cap room we'll have, that player should be at best, the 3rd or 4th most impactful new player on the defense next year when the season opens.  We're not going to be SB contenders in 2025, this defense isn't going to be fixed in one offseason.  

If T-Mac is there and you have a player of his potential at a position that is so vital in today's NFL, I can't see how you pass on that to take a defensive player when there isn't anyone in this draft at that slot who is going to be an instant day 1 impact maker.  A #1 WR is really the last piece of the puzzle we need on offense right now (if you're a Bryce believer), if you can get that in the 1st this year, you do and then use all other picks and cap room in 25 and 26 on the defense and we're ready to contend in 2026 (with Bryce or someone else).

Oh 100%, to not call would be not doing your job

But there's no chance they're trading him for anything less than a 1st, possibly even more than just a single 1st.  At that point is where you just have to say thanks but no thanks, we're just not in the position to be trading 1st round picks for players we have to then give a big contract to.

I also don't know if they'll even trade him if they dump Rodgers, as that's the relationship that seems to have soured Wilson at the moment.

      Like many of the old heads, I’ve been here for a long time.  I got a lot of respect for everyone on this board for your dedication to this team.  We’ve all been through it during the tougher years. At this point in life, I’m not one to judge anyone’s level of dedication, or their reasons why anymore.  Time, and a lot of bad football, will do that.  For me, it’s simple.  We share a common bond.  For that, I love and appreciate all of you crazy SOB’s. For me, last season was at a minimum, entertaining.  BY lead a young team to multiple come from behind 4th qtr wins.  That showed me heart, and that he has the clutch gene.  That’s the wildcard intangible.  For me, that was fun to watch even  if it was mindbogglingly frustrating at times.  Over the past two seasons, we have progressively built a better team around him.  On paper, the defense should be better this season.  That’ll help.  Let’s see what he can do as the other guys continue to develop too.  Besides, his contract is cheap for a few more years, and we just made some smart cap decisions during the draft. Let’s see how it shakes out.

      I would very much liked to have seen Jake Delhomme's career if Tommy Jone no hurt Jake.  I just know that roster and the leadership were destined to hit paydirt but Jake was never the same after the elbow injury, and unfortunately he was the sole reason they didn't make it back to the big one.  I think that 08 team was the best in the league, and Jake masked his inability well all season til the Arizona game put it all on display.  I'll go back to the season prior even and say the 07 team was primed to be a competitor.  Jake was off to a fantastic start that year (for a Panthers QB).  They may have been a championship caliber club for a few seasons after 08 too.
