Why does Sam Mills have a statue?

If you want to know a player I think emulates what the Panthers are all about, I would pick Brad Hoover. Played hurt. Played special teams. Played against guys drafted on Saturday when he wasn't even drafted on Sunday. And he was tight with everybody who worked at the stadium. He was one of them, just as much as he was one of the team.

I'll agree whole-heartedly to this.

a brad hoover statue would definitely work for me....but what no one realizes is that sam mills was the best panther defender in its short history, and i am a little biased i have always been a sam mills fan thats why my number was 51 in high school and in semi-pro, sam was everything and more on a defense that needed a leader he was such a good leader he nearly took them to the super bowl i remember the game very well when they played in the nfc championship against brett favre and the packers before brett went on to win his first super bowl. mills was a beast in that game its just to bad he didnt get his super bowl with carolina....he was very deserving of his statue because of who he was as a person, player and a coach. You couldn't have asked anymore from a man then what sam mills was

Smith won't get a statue. It isn't about just being a great player but being a great player and a great person who inspires others to greatness as well. Smitty is a great player but not a great person nor does he inspire others. Kasay is a great player and great person. Big difference.

If we win a Super Bowl with Smitty I think he'll get a statue. Maybe Kasay will get one but I think for a team that's less than 20 years old having a ton of statues is a bit much. I do think it would cool to have a statue of the Big Cat inside the front gates when you first walk into the stadium underneath that mural thing they have in there. Kind of there to welcome you.

Sam Mills didn't break any records or win any Super Bowls. Kurb said that is the only reason you should even have you number retired let alone a statue.

The reason Sam Mills got a statue is the same reason Jake Delhomme deserves to have his number retired. His contributions went beyond the football field.

Don't want to derail the thread with Jake stuff but just making a point that contributions to the franchise can be measured in ways other than the record books.

    • When I say "average NFL WR", for me, that's comparing him to all WRs in the league during that season/span of time.  He was of course better than those #4-6 WR's that can't even get on the field, but talent/ability wise, he probably wasn't any better than a #3 WR for most NFL teams, he just happened to be on one of the teams in 2019 with even worse WR's so he put up solid stats for the season. Here's more or less how I'm looking at it. Take T-Mac right now and Chark at his best, put them on every NFL team at this very moment, and where would they fall on the depth chart come Week 1 (basically, the teams that don't put the rookies at #1 to "make them earn it in camp" don't count, it's projecting week 1 depth charts). T-Mac would be at worst the #2 WR on the majority of teams this season, (hell, he's likely our #1 at this very moment right now already), peak Chark would not.  Yes, T-Mac still has to prove himself at this level, but his current ability, even as a rookie who hasn't played a snap yet, would have him above Chark on any team's week 1 depth chart. Because again, you can't just fall back on "well Chark had a 1,000 yard season" and use that as the reason for having him above T-Mac.  As he didn't have that 1k yards because he was a beast, it was because he was the only halfway decent receiving option on a bad team that was always losing and passing the ball (the Jags had the 7th worst scoring differential that season).
    • We clearly need to add a veteran stopgap at safety one way or the other.
    • On Panther's Wire too. No idea, just found it and trying to share. https://pantherswire.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/panthers/2025/06/15/nfl-free-agency-rumors-panthers-eagles-justin-simmons/84219881007/
