I can't see us staying at the bottom of the second with all our mid picks

Nah, I'd rather stay where we are in the 2nd and use those 5th rounders to move one of the 4th's up into the 3rd instead.

With all our holes, we can find a useful player in the 3rd, I'd rather fill an extra missing spot than get a better player in the 2nd.  In particular, I think that would be a great way to find our Center of the future, give up the 4th and like 2 5ths to move into the middle of the 3rd round to target a Center if there is one we like.

Have not read entire thread--could this mean they are going to deal Horn or not sign him to an extended deal?  He has been a bit injury prone, and maybe they do not want to pay full price for an elite CB who can only be on the field half the time.

Imagine they trade Horn for a second rounder, draft Johnson and sign Jackson--that saves you about $20m or so (guessing) and you have the CB spot locked up.  The $20m could go to an elite WR, and you could then grab an edge and a DT-type in round 2.

I don't know, but I imagine they are having talks about Horn's contract demands and his injury history.

Player swap Horn for Garrett Wilson

This would be peak Panthers

Draft someone in the Top 10, stick with them for 3 years while they can't stay on the field due to injuries, despite other teams likely willing to give up a decent pick for him.

Player finally has a full healthy season and makes the Pro Bowl.

Panthers don't want to extend him and then trade him for a 2nd round pick for us to draft another bust.

defenses are built up front.

If we do this......our only 2 defensive players in the first round of last 5 drafts would be 2 corners.

last night we just watched Philly win the Super Bowl rushing 4 and wrecking KC.

I get what you're saying, but it's also kind of a disingenuous way of phrasing it when the best player on our whole team is a defensive lineman.

Also, sometimes the best pass rush is by having great coverage downfield so the QB has to hold the ball longer, even the best offensive lines can only block players for so long before one gets loose to the QB

I think the inverse is more true. The best CBs can only cover so long until someone gets open when you’re getting little pressure.

I've been thinking this too. #8 to #57 is a looooooong time to sit and wait with three 4ths and two 5ths sitting in your back pocket. If the right guy is there I think you make a move. I know we need bodies but realistically once you get past the 2nd round your odds of finding starters drops dramatically. You're basically looking for quality depth past the 2nd round and definitely past the 3rd round unless you find a needle in the haystack. I don't think we make five picks in the 4th and 5th rounds combined.

What if they build the inside through free agency like they did the offense last offseason?

If they are young guys looking for their 2nd contract? Maybe. The first pick has to be bpa for the defense.  A corner ranked anywhere from 15 to 25 among the class does not scream must take over other positions.  JMO.

    • Icky was always a weak pass blocker come out of college. Cross was the premier pass blocker in that class. Much easier to learn run blocking than pass blocking. I never expected Icky to ever become an elite pass blocker. If he was average, that's all I really expected. I did expect him to be an absolute mailer in the run game.
    • We aren’t in danger of being in the basement anymore and if we keep drafting well we could get to the playoffs after a while. I don’t mind if we get a new QB and coach eventually but we are “stable” and I’m grateful for it.
    • I prefer 9-8. Reason being, winning season shows overall improvement and is the 1st step to establishing a winning culture. Backing into the playoffs with a losing record doesn't show you earned anything. It's the product of a weak division. If playoffs were based off records, most likely you're not going because another team(s) have a better record.  Chances are too, the next season, you're going to have a tougher schedule and a couple of those bounces that went your way are going to go the other direction and it's another losing season and no playoffs.  There have been 5 teams to get into the playoffs with a losing record. The 2014 and 2025 Panthers are 2 of those teams. Losing record trip 3 isn't exactly something I would be proud of doing. We have 9 playoff appearances so far, 2 of them simply because we won a shitty division. Another one would mean 30% of our appearances are only because we were the least stinky turd. That's a stat I'd want to flush.
