Moore Rollouts?

Thinking back over the preseason games, my mostly-kinda-sorta-moderately-still-functional-middle-aged memory pondered this question...

Did we see Matt Moore do much rolling out?

My sometimes-generally-usually-somewhat-semi-reliable-middle-aged memory says no.

We saw it a fair share last season, mind you, especially against the high-pressure Vikings defense. And as I recall, Moore actually did fairly well passing while on the move. Not necessarily a surprise, given that quarterback coach Rip Scherer considers solid footwork to be of high importance. A decent amount of QB practice time over the past year or so has been dedicated to footwork drills, throwing while on the run, etc.

So with the actual season now upon us, will we see it again?

Likely yes, but it's not a magic bullet.

More throwing on the run might make Moore more comfortable, but it doesn't automatically mean Moore throws more accurately. More to the point, even if we do get more accuracy from Moore, it'll take more holding on to the ball on the other end if we're to get more consistency, more production and more touchdowns. Balance-wise, I'd put the need for improvement on both ends of the pass at about 50-50 (more or less).

So will Moore rollout more? Well, I suppose that's one of those things I'll be watching for on Sunday.

Whether he does or not, here's hoping that the passing game is more effective than it's looked up till now.

We know it's coming. It's still a stale of the playbook. Fake the handoff then roll out and hit smitty. Moore is a lot more mobile than Delhomme as well.

All I know is Sunday needs to get here now.

I hope they don't try to coach this out of Moore. He's clearly like the Sundance Kid.

However we have never had an offensive line that's played to the strength of an (even slightly) mobile quarterback. Davidson sure never did it while creating New England's O-line. If you coach to create a pocket and he rolls outside of the pocket.....

We haven't seen it so far, bottom line. But I firmly believe we haven't seen a lot of what will be played this season regarding the Panther's offense.

(I sure hope we haven't seen it all.)

You could have easily slipped in either Moore or more in there. I'm disappointed. :frown2:

From what I recall, he did most of the rolling out during the Vikings game when Schwartz was matched up with Jared Allen (rolling away from Allen). I was shocked the Vikings didn't adjust to that and send a corner or safety blitz to stop Moore from doing that.

I'm sure we'll see Moore rolling out quite a bit this year, but that's something opponents have on tape now so we need to be careful.

I think we will see more rollouts. The good news about rollouts is that it makes it harder to pressure the quarterback. The bad news is that it virtually eliminates any receivers on the backside of the field as potential targets. Since Moore is best throwing in the middle of the field it won't hurt him like someone who used the whole field and could throw from sideline to sideline. I would like to see it used to bring the action in one direction and then run a reverse or throw a screen to the other side.

I don't think Schwartz was matched up with Allen. Schwartz was playing RT...Allen lines up over the LT.
