I have read that he is NOT an elite edge, but to be fair to you and against my point, there is this by Mayock ( I respect Mayock):

I think Carter is obviously the preference even with the foot, on paper, on tape, on everywhere. But Walker played obvious passing downs largely as spy or delayed blitz. Sometimes he A gap blitzed off the snap. Could be a higher sack guy in the NFL, got to play more coverage at ILB in the big leagues and I can’t see him doing as much of that. Had he been able to pin his ears back in obvious passing situations like Carter, Green, EZ, Walker might’ve been closer to a 10+ sack player.

As someone who was very loudly wrong about him before that draft: what I learned from his failure is the difference between violence and toughness.

Simmons will hit, but he doesn’t like collisions he’s not going to win. His career highlight is still blocking a kick and then walloping the defenseless kicker. But he won’t get downhill and splash a lead blocker in the hole as a box linebacker.

I could be wrong about him again, I guess. But I don’t see a role for him as a safety, and he’s not a nickel, and if he won’t/can’t do the linebacker stuff well, then I’m not sure what he’d do for us.

Of course, if we do sign him, I’ll talk myself into it immediately.

You got the gist of his main issue.

He plays LB or whatever on D, but hates to tackle and contact.

That's the summary.

I normally have a wide margin of " Hey vet min/bring him for try out/maybe he changed/etc etc". But he can not be trusted, * but he did just have his "best" season. He's like those RB that refuse to run between the tackles, bounce everything outside...they too are scared of contact. That's like the whole point of NFL, he's able to trick and athlete his way for 5 years, props to him and his agent.

Me personally I view him like virus, I wouldn't want him on film shying away from hitting while the rookies&UDFA are looking for how the Panthers do things. Plus Im the biggest sucker there is about giving former 1st, 2nd, etc another chances. Just not someone who doesn't want to play NFL and fools those with his god given gifts.

Not to add another layer to this, but I feel contact and hitting its the biggest problem for the NFL. I sorta agree with TEs, WRs, and RBs either going out of bounds or falling to the ground to avoid a solid hit(this goes out the window for 1st downs, SB, etc.) Like if a WR caught a deep slant and already gained 17 yards, but here comes a safety with a great angle, Im all for that WR to fall on the ground...... ugh...... But I think the opposite for my defense. I feel this topic is central sun hot and NFL has done a great job in avoiding it. Im surprised NFL is still allowed, I have huge doubts in the future.

    • It's crazy with how much winning was going on when we had a little cool off period that we're still just a couple games out of 6th. Moussa is getting better every week and Coby is getting comfortable. Would be nice to get to 6 but I think this team is a lot more stacked than the last couple play ins. I can't remember the exact rules but if you're 7th seed and win the first game I think you automatically move on and don't have to play the second game?
    • I think it was a thing for sure. Panthers weren’t too many people’s first choice. Or 5th choice.  2022 and 2023… coaches fired mid season. Consecutive years. You want any of that?  He has definitely overseen a rehab of how the Panthers are perceived. Because we are a place that is seen as up and coming. And just the little thing of he accommodated Theilen so graciously, that gets noticed. It all adds up. Dan is doing a lot of things right, probably most things.  Needs a good draft.
    • K, I think that is dumb, but you do you. I didn't find anything online that made him out to be a dislikable person. I am certain the Panthers would have cared so much if they lost your fandom if they hired Sean Payton. But bet you would have come crawling back if Sean lead us to a Super Bowl victory or Golden leads UNC to a champion ship. It is easy to say you are gonna leave a team if the hire someone you dislike when the chips are down. But people like you tend to come crawling back once the team finds success.
