Would you make this trade?

Panthers55 seems the most opposed so. I get what you are saying about how Smith and Dwill have had great careers as Panthers. They have been our identity. But time keeps on ticking. Salaries continue to climb. Eventually you have to allow other players to climb the depth chart. This is the era we are in. In the old days guys stayed and retired with a team now guys are moved while they have trade value.

Another thing is i have seen Denvers stable of RB's. Maroney and Moreno are both STILL underachieving. White, Ball and Buckhalter would not keep most from trading for a LEGIT RB. Fox would LOVE to bring Dwill to Denver to help his rebuild. A high to mid 2nd is fair compensation. Throw in a 2012 pick to sweeten it and we would be silly NOT to take it.

Concerning SMith. I am sorry he has not exactly been a boy scout while here. And people do trade known commodity for the unknown upside. It happens quite a bit in the league.

Also i find your particulars on when have we drafted a pro bowl player in the 2nd or third funny since you seem to have picked after 2001 for a reason. Cause Kris Jenkins, Steve Smith, Will Witherspoon, Mike Rucker, Mike Minter, and MOOSE worked out pretty well last time we were building a franchise.

And who ran that draft vs who has run it since? Sorry but 2ND round is not Hurney's strong suit...

2002 Deshaun Foster

2003 Bruce Nelson

2004 Keary Colbert

2005 Eric Shelton

2006 Richard Marshall

2007 Dwayne Jarrett

2007 Ryan Kalil

2 out of 7

Although I would say he's been pretty money on 3RDs Spoon, Wharton, Anderson, Johnson, Connor, Godfrey

I love how people keep saying Smith is "poison" to a young QB. First off, if Smith yellling at you "poisons" you, then you aren't cut out for football. Second, all the young QB has to do to shut him up is throw him the ball. It's really simple.

i guess trade Williams for all the second round DBs you want. the kid will get a TON of practice since he'll never get off the field due to our 32nd ranked offense.

i would be happy if we didn't spend a single pick on defense this year. that's not where we need to rebuild. Williams is the best player on our offense, we need to build around him, not ditch him.

Have you seen Denver's stable of running backs? Not sure they need backs before they build line: Lawrence Maroney, Knowshon Marino, Lendale White, Corell Buckhalter, Lance Ball.

Have you seen Denver try to run the ball? It's laughable and it's not all on the OL either.

Moreno is a bust. I don't know if I've ever seen a weaker runner at the NFL level. Denver needs to just bite the bullet on him and start using him selectively kind of like the Saints did with Reggie Bush. He's a similar runner to Bush in that he's very dangerous in the open field, but get him in a crowd and he's looking to go down.

It only makes sense to trade both of them. Franchising Williams won't cost a ton; the average pay for RB's isn't close to the $20 million+ we would have had to pay Peppers to work out a similar kind of deal last offseason. That's why they didn't franchise him, because he could have signed the offer sheet and they'd have been on the hook for $20 million.

Williams has more value than Peppers because he won't cost as much and is younger. Teams are very reluctant to give up 1st round picks on 30-year-old DE's, but a team like Denver, Green Bay, New England, Washington, etc. that is going to be in a position to use one of their 2nd/3rd rounders on a RB this year will surely be interested in using that pick to acquire a proven (and still young) Pro Bowl RB like Williams. It doesn't hurt that Fox is now in Denver and will want a proven runner - AND they have two 2nd rounders.

Smith... I've said it all along, we NEED to trade this guy. His situation here is exactly what Fox's was: it's simply time for both sides to move on. They'll both be better off in the long run. We've got two solid young WR's in Gettis & LaFell; we use the 1st pick on Green and we've got our #1 star WR and a solid #2 AND #3 for the next 7-8 years. Plus we get the pick(s) for Smith that we can use to bring in some young talent for the DL/OL.

And the most important part of this: QB. We WILL take a QB in the 1st round next year. If we can't get Luck we'll trade up and take Matt Barkley - Jerry is COMMITTED to getting this team a franchise QB and that will be priority #1 in the '12 draft. Once that new QB comes in, it's going to do him MUCH more good having 3 solid young WR's that he can grow with over the long haul than a 33 year old veteran in a contract year with a declining skillset.

we need 2 good RBs for this system to work, goodson isnt reliable enough and dwill is a pro bowler. smith isnt a poison if you dont miss him everytime he is open, even the calmest recievers will get upset when the team is losing every week and he is getting open but the QB looks like a scared puppy in the pocket and cant get it to him. thats what i think at least

What system? Fox isn't here any more. We don't know the new system, yet.

No You can't trade our stars

They mean so much to Panthers based on their past performance.

Panthers never trade a Star player ,they let them walk away for nothing

Serious

Trading both is what needs to be done

Chargers could also be a great trading partner

They have a Vet back up QB

Broncos might swap Orton for one of our players

Either way Panthers gain a Vet QB on roster in exchange for Smitty or Dwilliams

There might not be a franchise tag. Can't rely on that.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/03/28/availability-of-franchise-tag-for-2011-is-unclear/

Article XX, Section 1 of the current CBA. Here’s the full text: “Except as set forth in Section 10 below, each Club shall be permitted to designate one of its players who would otherwise be an Unrestricted Free Agent as a Franchise Player each season during the term of this Agreement. The player so designated may be one who would otherwise be a Restricted Free Agent. Except as set forth in Section 2(a)(i) below, any Club that designates a Franchise Player shall be the only Club with which such Franchise Player may negotiate or sign a Player Contract, during the period the player is so designated, notwithstanding the number of his Accrued Seasons. The period for Clubs to designate Franchise Players will begin on the twenty-second day preceding the first day of the new League Year and will end at 4:00 p.m. New York time on the eighth day preceding the first day of the new League Year.”

Here’s what it potentially means: Since the CBA doesn’t expire until March 2011 and since the deadline for designating franchise players expires in February 2011, before the CBA ends, the franchise designation may be used for the 2011 season.

The key language, arguably capable of multiple interpretations, is this: “[E]ach Club shall be permitted to designate one of its players who would otherwise be an Unrestricted Free agent as a Franchise Player each season during the term of this Agreement.” (Emphasis added.)

The league, which declined to provide its position on this matter beyond merely citing Article XX, Section 1 as the operative clause, would likely argue that, because the deadline for use of the tag in 2011 applies “during the term of this Agreement,” franchise tags are available for 2011. The union, which has not yet responded to our request for its own position regarding this issue, likely would claim that the qualifier “each season” makes the franchise tag inapplicable during 2011, since 2011 is not a season that falls within the “term of this Agreement.”

I think its tome to trade Williams. Our RB coach is possibly going to Denver with Foxy. Denver has a high second round pick that we might get in a trade.

We could package our #1 with Williams and possibly Clausen for their #2, the second round pick and either The Golden Calf of Bristol or their other QB.

A more plausible situation might be to trade Williams straight up for Orton.

Fox can then go out and pick up a 34 year old to back up and tutor his favorite guy in the world--The Golden Calf of Bristol.

Orton will be a good guy to give us stability till Clause either makes it or we draft a franchise QB.

Someone like the Rams, Broncos, or Browns might be willing to give us a third for Steve Smith.

At this point you take:

1st AJ Green WR

3rd Noel Devine RB

3rd Donte Moch LB

3rd Kendrick Ellis DT

I would also not be against trading Everette Brown for a 4th to someone who runs the 3-4 which would be a much better system for him.

Key FA pickups would be:

Tyson Clabo T/G ATL

Brett Grimes CB ATL

Zach Miller TE OAK

Jacoby Jones WR HOU
