Five reasons we don't take Green #1

If we don't find a trading partner at the #1 spot, I think we go defense first.

Of the two top rated players at this time its between Fairley (DT) and Peterson (CB). If Williams is traded or lost, I think we go with Peterson. The reason for this is because of our CB situation and Peterson also can solve our punt return/kick return problem. Last year we rotated several players doing this duty. Goodson was used some, but with Williams gone we should not use him for this duty also. This would give us a starter on defense and offense. I could see us taking Fairley, but Peterson I think would be the better pick.

I haven't posted anything about it, but at this point, it wouldn't suprise me. 99% might be a little agressive on the confidence scale, but 8 out of the last 10 #1 picks have been QB's and with it being our biggest need (according to Hurney), why not try to address it.

Maybe 90% sure.. if we think about the 2 teams that didn't take QB in the past 10 years.. we need to see who their QBs were.

06' Draft, Texans select Mario Williams.. this is the same draft where they traded with Atlanta to aquire Matt Schaub.

08' Draft, Dolphins select Jake Long.. and take Chad Henne with their 2nd round pick. (We don't have a 2nd round pick this season, which imo forces our hand).

So basically, if you don't have a franchise QB, then you take one with the #1 overall pick.. and I think Hurney and JR both indicated they are looking for the face of the franchise, and QB is our #1 need. We simply can not workout those top tier QB's until the combine because they are junior's.

I am 80% sure we take Blaine Gabbert. He is a huge downgrade in comparison to Andrew Luck.. but it's all that is available.

My confidence level is way below 90% on that. How many of those teams picking #1 took a QB with their first pick the previous year?

Also need to look at if there were true "franchise" QBs in those drafts. Maybe Cutler but he wasn't top 5 and not VY either.

Back on topic, I really like Hankerson from Miami

I would almost safely bet by our pick in the third the cream of the crop will be long gone. We are gonna see two maybe three WR's in the first. Then your other two reasons will be gone by the third. I will readily admit this is a talented class of WR's but it is very top heavy. Jerrel Jernigan, Austin Pettis, Greg Little, and the like will be there in the third and later but they are NOT gonna make the impact on the squad that GREEN would.

When you draft the first overall you are are looking at players able to come in and make an impact. High profile and high impact is the pick you are looking at with the first. Drafting for need ( Peterson/Fairley) over BPA is never a good ideal. I personally feel in a very talented group of WR's Green is the best. Now using a internet mock draft lets say it falls this way.

Bengals Green.

Rams Julio.

Ravens Young

Falcons Smith

Redskins Hankerson in the second.

So our division rival the Falcons add a weapon across from White and the Bengals upgrade for a quieter Ocho and we have Lafell and Gettis.

5 reasons not to draft Nick Fairley. I will even start with the players that have a chance to be there or this would have been a top TEN

1. Jurrell Casey

2. Marvin Austin

3. Jarvis Jenkins

4. Sione Fua

5. Kenrick Ellis

Defensive tackles despite the recent SUH drafting are not typically first overall material. Granted neither are WR's and Corners but PP and Green are rare athletes. Fairley could find out that NFL lineman are not as easy to push around as college kids.

Unless we trade down, I'd say it's a much safer bet that our first pick won't be a quarterback, and even if we do I'd hedge.

this would be a monumentally bad idea and we would be the biggest laughing stock since oakland drafted russell.

seriously.

we draft a QB with our first pick this year and we are making a HUGE ugly reach. gabbert is as much a project as newton with very little upsie, but my thoughts on him are in a good few other threads.

point is, if we draft out of need, we risk reaching for a player that isn't anywhere near worth that selection. draft BPA among current needs...or draft BPA overall. that isn't even close to being QB.

we will get our QB, i just don't want to reach for him this year. see what we can find in FA this year that can compete for the job. either we find one we can win with or we pick early next year and end up with either luck or barkley.

None of those four would have the impact on the Panthers they would enjoy elsewhere. AJ Green will have much more impact on the Rams with Sam Bradford throwing him the ball than he would on the Panthers with no one who can throw him the ball.

Our Qb situation is no doubt atrocious and AJ Green is Unlikely as the NO.1 pick. I would as GM take him or Patrick Peterson assuming we are unable to trade down. I think Volek will be close behind to the Panthers but I think a Kyle Orton would be ideal for a couple of years.

if your comfortable going to battle with LaFell, Gettis as possible 1 and 2 wrs..with another rookie Qb well well be drafting Luck next seaon again. Qb should be addressed through a vet for a 2 year stop gap. The 2012 QB class looks fantastic. Why panic this year and settle when the elite prospects that have the skill play at CB, WR ,DT(eh).

As for Gabbert..if you going to take a QB from a spread offense Cam Newton is by FAAARRR better than Gabbert. He must be related to someone high up in the Masionic society. Gabbert is slow..his throws are inconsistent..limited athletically..and just looks like his frame will hinder him ala Byron Leftwich(who btw a TON of people on here were clamoring for then!) :beatdeadhorse5:

Prepare for the ides of Steve Smith departing...Green Lafell Gettis looks alot better than Lafell, Gettis and Edwards IMO.

how is that relevant when in a year or 2 we'll get that QB?

Good backup to support the theory and at this point it wouldn't suprise me at all, interesting to see if it happens.
