Clowney released

Y'all forgetting about Maz Mwansa.

He would be the fifth DE IF the cut Barno and DJ Johnson.  He would not cost us a roster spot--and that is the key.

"Carolina’s pass rush is being reshaped under new outside linebackers coach AC Carter, and recent addition Patrick Jones II. While Mwansa won’t count against the active roster thanks to the IPP slot, his upside is significant. He’s been likened physically to Eagles pass rusher Nolan Smith Jr. and already shows flashes of edge-bending potential.

Panthers Director of Player Personnel Cole Spencer summed it up: “Anytime you get a raw ball of clay like that, and the league affords a roster spot, it’s pretty cool.”

could be--I read several articles about him.  This is not a foreign relations project--they think they have a rough gem here.  Would that not be awesome?  In my mind, edge is set.  Barno and Johnson are history.  That roster spot savings for a fifth DE is huge.  It means we can add a guy somewhere else.

not sure how i feel about this. kind of sad but also kind of "meh..."

defense will be better this year with or without him. not a make or break presence on the roster.

Banking on a rotational player to step up.

Hope he does well here.

That's what Clowney is at this point and this guy is younger with the potential to further develop while Clowney achieved a very disappointing peak for his hype and #1 overall pick status and is on the decline.

The other potentially newsworthy item from the article...

Love this because it eliminates any chance of rushing him back too soon, let him fully rest up and hopefully we have a diamond in the rough being added to the 2026 team.

My one question is why does this mean he'll miss the full season already though?

I thought players get put on the PUP list going into camp all the time without it officially ending their season, why is this different?

I think they have already decided to keep him out this year.  After last year they are going to take their time, which I agree with you on it being the right call.  Try to save anything we can from this pick...

6-2 230--so he will probably add 15 lbs of muscle--he has bend, natural speed, and is still learning-at combines (not NFL--CFL and one down in Florida, I think) he blew away the competition at Edge.  I think I read that he has already been given #96--so our five Edge players are in the barn.

Hate it based on not a single vet edge.

Another tough year for our DC.

As always guys will come available that no one expects as other teams go through their cuts too. I think we'll pick up a cheaper vet edge later in the summer.

I'd have liked to just keep Clowney but I get the reasoning behind cutting him and I don't think it's gonna hurt the team much at all.

Yea, I'm not questioning why they are doing it, that I totally get and agree with.

I was asking why does putting him on the PUP list now, mean his season is over.  As I thought players often start camp on the PUP list when they are rehabbing an injury, but they're allowed to come off of it later.

    • He is trying to build a team that can carry a crap QB because the owner insists that we coddle the crap QB.    PS I don’t know What Tennessee was doing firing Vrabel.  I know that Dave’s (and most of the posters here) obsession with having a shiny modern offensive brain and the finesse offense that generally comes with that preclude interest in hiring Vrabel or any other defensive guy.
    • I feel like Canales, or anyone that had to depend on Young for success, should get a shot without him. IOW I agree we need to see that. He is green as poo. With too much on his plate, having to be QB guru play calling guru (around what might mouse can do), and the rest of the team too.  Steep learning curve.  People talk about you Young going elsewhere and succeeding should be wary of that with Canales.[edit: not saying immediately, but he can get himself another shot] We knew to get a coach we had to hire one too early. And we did. So I am more hesitant to trash his potential than I am BY9. How big or fast Canales is, doesn’t matter; we can”t go by his physique to see his ceiling like we can with a high school sized QB with bad footwork.   as far as improving….. When the OL’s continuity gets messed with, you have setbacks and it takes time to re-establish. That happened to Dalton last year I think.  Things around him were just not that good. Out of sync. It never really settled back in before he had his accident. Same thing is happening here so it might be a while before we see any improvement, especially with this guy playing QB.  Maybe at home against a team doing us favors, we can see something better.
    • I was there in spring 2023. I just knew. Could see it in Bryce, what he is. College. And for me to see it, it needs to be obvious. I guess everyone thought his other ‘qualities’ overrode his physical deficiencies. Relative to the NFL.  With Tepper, we are down to hoping a blind squirrel finds that nut. On top of that, we have to worry he will think he can tell the nut how to be a nut.
