I dont think he was moving the needle either way but without knowing the details its a curious move.  And I wonder if there was any trade for draft comp on the table?

He got cut so that answers that question. If there was any offer on the table we would've taken it versus cutting him.

we got too much young juice to sit behind an old man. 24 tackles is mad replaceable. Much luck to ya bruh

I think that's the reason for this move. We have a lot of young talent and we're not expecting to compete for a SB next year so let's free up snaps for those young guys to speed up their development and build this thing up. Might as well not sit for the games and go ahead and free up those snaps on camp too.

This is the type of approach many of us have been begging for from the Panthers for years. Stop trying to bandaid rosters together to try to be the best bad team you can be on the current and just focus on building a quality organization.

From the article:

Clowney was one of several transactions the Panthers made on Thursday. The club also placed Jonathon Brooks on the physically unable to perform list. The running back tore his ACL during Week 14 last season. By placing the second year back on PUP now, he will be out for the 2025 season. The move allows him time to get healthy after his second such tear in as many years.

Basketball to tight end convert Colin Granger was waived with an injury settlement. The club also made the following moves:

Waived (injured prior to 53) defensive tackle Popo Aumavae, released tight end Jordan Matthews, and waived receiver T.J. Luther, receiver Dax Milne, offensive lineman Andrew Raym and defensive tackle Jerrod Clark.

The roster currently sits at 62 players. The releases come ahead of rookie minicamp, the arrival of eight drafted rookies and a slew of undrafted rookie free agents who will all have to be signed.

    • MHS, You are missing Claudin Cherelus is a LB that's in the mix for the 4th spot. He's been here for 2 years and had a couple injuries. I mean he was a wavier claim and been here for evero system, just had bad luck when given a chance. Jon Rhat is the current leader mainly cause of he is the ST ace. But Id say, Cherelus has the same % to make the roster.  CB has the recent wavier claim of MJ Devonshire a 2024 7th rounder. He's got the good-great combine numbers but he's small size. Still he's in the mix for backup duties, in fact all the non-UDFA are wavier claims.  ______________________________________________________________   Dam shame about Clowney. I view this as a bad move. I feel clowny is well worth the 7.7, even as a backup. He played hard the whole year without help. I just feel he would have helped more than either DJ Johnson or Barno.  My only cope is he's 32 and at any point his miro-knee could force him to drop off a cliff performance-wise. I wanted to keep him around at least until the trade deadline and if no chance at playoff, flip him for a anything. NFL is a meat grinder, no love for locals....
    • Might as well. We need to get these rookies on the field and see if they can play ASAP.
    • This hate this part of football and then you have to get down to the 53 Man Roster 🙁
