Jadeveon Clowney upset about being released

Recommended Posts

Before the draft, Panthers G.M. Dan Morgan was vague when asked about the future of edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney. After the draft, a report emerged that the Panthers engaged in pre-draft conversations about possibly trading Clowney.

It was no shock, then, when the Panthers moved on from Clowney, on Thursday.

In eleven NFL seasons, Clowney (the first overall pick in 2014) has played for the Texans, Seahawks, Titans, Browns, Ravens, and Panthers.

He fully intends to keep going.

I’m definitely gonna play well,” Clowney told Joseph Person of TheAthletic.com. “You can mark my word on that. I don’t care where I end up playing at, I’m gonna play extremely well.”

Clowney seemed to disagree with the Panthers’ decision to part ways.

“I think I played well for Carolina [last] year, considering the circumstances that . . . unfolded for me,” Clowney said. “I played with a bunch of guys that was hurt this past year. And I ended up playing extremely well for them. So it is what it is. I can play the game. I can play football. There are 31 other teams. I just hope another team gives me that opportunity so I can prove myself again. I feel like I can do that.”

“I got a sense then they wanted me out of the building,” Clowney said. “I was just like, ‘Y’all could’ve told me this back when I was coming in here during the offseason.’ I kind of had a sense, though. I’ve been around the game long enough to know, so I was OK.”

I mean, I get being pissed. Getting fired sucks. But if he wasn't wanted in the building there's probably a reason for it on his end. I mean, he's a decent vet and didn't carry a huge cap hit so if they were in a hurry to jettison him it kinda feels like they didn't want him around our newly drafted edge rushers.

I think there's a degree of sour grapes at play here. At the same time regardless the FO really needs this young pass rush to step up. Just don't want to end up in a situation where things don't go according to plan and then the second guessing starts. Evero better bring the heat this year.

That's where I am. He'd be great in a rotational role unburdened from having to start. Has to be something deeper for him being cut for essentially peanuts, or we're gonna go after depth/stop gap at another position.

I see a dude that says more behind the scenes than the camera. He constantly  gets bolted after a year... a sign of a locker room cancer.

And honestly, they did him a favor. If they knew they were going to cut him they could've carried him into camp waiting on some other team to have an injury issue or something and for the opportunity to trade him to potentially present itself before cutting him at final roster cuts where his options elsewhere would likely be more limited. You're way better off getting cut now than getting cut then.

True. He never came close to living up to his #1 overall pick status but he's still a decent roster piece. He shouldn't be getting bounced around like he does unless there's a non-football reason for it. Probably still carries that #1 overall pick entitlement without producing the results.

I don't think its anything deeper than cap savings.  We are very tight in terms of cap space.

Jadeveon Clowney is looking for his fourth team in four years and seventh NFL team overall after being released by the Carolina Panthers on Thursday. The move frees up $7.78 million in cap space for Carolina as Clowney was due around $8.53 million in salary in 2025, with $2 million reportedly guaranteed.

And cutting Clowney saves more than just about anyone else we could reasonably cut on the dline.

That being said, I am a little concerned that we are going to be relying so much on unproven rookies.

He has a long history of this attitude which is why he has been playing on one year deals for so long. Teams get tired of his attitude and the team moral being brought down outweighs his talent. There is a reason why teams let him go even though he is a solid performing vet
