For those thinking Renfrow isn't making the team...Ha!

1. Their ages are completely irrelevant.

2. Thielen had more yards and over twice as many TDs in 10 games last year than Renfrow has had in 27 games since 2022. So yeah, he probably should have more playing time and opportunity.

Not to mention JT and Coker who both have been considerably more effective as receivers than Renfrow has been recently and who also have the consideration of needing playing time for their development.

In 2023 Thielen was 10th in receptions and 14th in targets. In the entire league. We had the 32nd passing offense. There is zero correlation between Thielen getting targets/receptions and actually winning games anymore than there is with Renfrow.

I disagree. He is an experienced veteran and past Pro Bowl receiver who is a very adept route runner. Is it really a stretch to think that he could see the third most targets and receptions in a decidedly super young WR corps (minus one old guy who has one foot in retirement)? Renfrow certainly saw the most targets on day one of camp.

People read way too much into small sample sizes in training camp. Look, I hope for the best from Renfrow and that he's fully recovered from injuries and rejuvenated and can have a nice comeback season. But even at his best he was an average slot receiver who compiled his way to a single 1000 yard season (in a year Derek Carr threw for 4800 yards). He has been horribly ineffective in 27 games since then and out of the league for a year.

Coker showed more to me as a UDFA rookie last year than Renfrow has shown in his entire career, frankly.

Thielen yes is near retirement and basically just a locker room guy at this point but he's also still been wayyyy more effective than Renfrow recently.

And JT also has shown a ton of potential and ability as a pass catching threat and will be on the field nearly every down. I'd be shocked if he has less targets/receptions than Renfrow.

I'm not super high on XL frankly (thought Coker was better and showed more potential last year), but I think it can be assumed he'll be top 2 with Tet.

Hey anything can happen. Maybe Thielen shows he's lost more than a few steps rapidly, TE becomes forgotten in our offense, XL gets benched and Renfrow does have that great comeback year. But as it stands now I doubt any of those things happen and 1 practice in August isn't changing my mind. We'll see what happens throughout camp and once pads come on and the young guys and rookies naturally earn more opportunity and playing time. Maybe it'll be a different discussion then, but Renfrow's last 27 games and year off FAR outweigh 1 practice.

But why chop off career stats and not look at respective circumstances in general? It's really convenient to support a decidedly negative narrative to begin at 2022 when 2021 was a career year, 2023 was a "sick" year and 2024 doesn't count due to the same sickness. Moreover, there's a pretty big gap between 29 and 34 in regards to a football career and how it relates to production and even expectation. There's an argument that Renfrow still has a few years left in his prime. Thielen? I don't know about that.

All I'm saying is that keeping everything in perspective is perhaps the wisest path.

The Panthers are not cutting Jimmy Horn. With all of the options they have for roster construction now, plus what he brings to the table, he is here this year.

I don't think anyone said that they would. He's young, has some pop, can help on special teams, but he's going to have to play his way up the depth chart (over several guys, including Renfrow) due to the pecking order. He has a lot to learn and a lot to prove, the primary thing being that he belongs in the league. The next month is important for him.

If he's top 3 in receptions then our offense has a real problem.

That's generally the area a healthy Renfrow operated under.  First 3 seasons in the league.  And again, if healthy, he will get open better and easier than basically everyone on the roster (that's being polite)....for what will be safer throws than some jump ball downfield to XL.

I don't think the yardage would not be crazy but yeah, I totally could see a scenario where he racks up a lot of catches given what he is and does.  Safe open throws to move chains.  That's Renfrow.

I agree with you there.

All I'm saying is that we should just keep things in perspective (different circumstances, ages and all that).

My hot take (which I guess it is considering the responses) is purely based upon Bryce's comments. I don't think he was talking out of his ass.

I personally would take Renfrow over Moore if the former truly is back to his old form.

FWIW though, I wouldn't use ink yet on Renfrow making this roster over Moore. Sheena Quick was on WFNZ this morning saying that if she had to choose bw the two, she thinks Moore makes it over Renfrow.

His last 4 years.  Rec - Targets

103 - 128

36 - 50

25- 37

0 -0 (obviously hurt/sick)

If this dude is top 3 in receptions something has gone drastically wrong

well, first there are lots of things wrong and that generally go wrong in Carolina.  Which is why it's not hard to see a path where that plays out.

Rookie year - top 3

Soph year - top 3

3rd year - top 3

4th year - only suited up 10 and then the health stuff started up.

So yeah, a healthy Hunter....gets open and gets open quick for easy throws. Receptions.   BY isn't a deep ball shot taker.  That's not his game.  It's an easy call that fans will be either mad at Tmac or XL (maybe both).  Bryce doesn't have the balls to satisfy the fan wish of 2 outside guys.

I mean, Adam Theilen is basically walking proof as well of why it can easily happen.

Actually struggled with concussion and oblique injuries from week 2 of the 4th year, so even those 10 games were heavily compromised.

You suck, you sit. You ball out, you see the field. Drop passes, get stupid penalties or run sloppy/wrong routes? You sit. I hold no ill will towards any of the players, but we deserve the best Panthers team possible.

If Horn turns in to SS89 v 2.0 and is obviously the best WR on the team, then he is WR#1, draft position be damned. I’m not saying it’ll happen, it likely won’t, but the guys who give the team the best chance to win have to see the field.

Think they will keep 7 WRs for final cuts, then will place one on PS. MOORE seems like the best candidate to move because it's unlikely a team takes him from us. Renfrow probably wouldn't last on the PS and you know Horn would not.

Or

One of the WRs will come up with a questionable injury, which would help out the situation and no players are lost.

I see horn as being the return man this year as Smith was his rookie year.

Horn had 14 punt returns in 4 years.   I think way too many people are crediting him for having this ST upper hand that doesn’t really exist

89 had 72 in just 2 years at Utah.

NFL punt returners are a different breed.  Gets hard to predict who can handle it.  Didn’t DJ Moore buckle under the pressure with his attempts?

I do like Horn’s potential though.  He is the most unique WR on the roster vs the rest of the group.  But 6th round WRs are generally that for a reason

    • Here’s a summary of the JJ and Luke podcast transcript. Opening / Bryce Young Fifth-Year Option     •    JJ: Breaking news — Panthers picked up Bryce Young’s fifth-year option at $25.9M, guaranteed, coming in 2027. Combined with his 2025 salary of ~$6M, that’s $31M over two years — called it a “no-brainer.”     •    Luke: Enthusiastic about the move. Highlighted Bryce’s improving TD/INT ratios (11/10 → 15/9 → 23/11) and the value of entering year three with Dave Canales. Noted $25M is a bargain relative to the $60M top of market. Luke’s Personal Update — Charlotte Christian Football     •    Luke: Working with Charlotte Christian school football program, which hired a new head coach. Coaches include Greg Olsen, Luke, and Greg’s dad Chris Olsen (a New Jersey State coaching Hall of Famer).     •    JJ: Jokingly quipped that Charlotte Christian’s coaching staff is “the world’s greatest” — a Fox analyst, a Hall of Famer, and the best Panthers RB ever — all coaching middle school football.     •    Luke: Praised Chris Olsen’s deep football knowledge spanning decades and his ability to connect with kids. Round 1, Pick 19 — Monroe Freeling, OT, Georgia     •    JJ: Panthers were on the clock and submitted their pick almost immediately — a sign of confidence and preparation. Freeling is 6’7”, 320 lbs, played in the SEC in a pro-style system.     •    Luke: Loved the pick. Emphasized you can never have too many quality offensive linemen. Noted Freeling’s size, athleticism, and arm length as key traits. Said the pick also reflects team’s philosophy of drafting great people, not just great players.     •    JJ: Noted reporter Darren Gantt compared Freeling favorably to Jordan Gross — bigger, heavier, and faster — as a potential franchise left tackle.     •    Luke: Pointed out that young players like Freeling still have physical development ahead of them, comparing the trajectory to Christian McCaffrey’s growth from age 20 onward. Round 2, Pick 49 — Lee Hunter, DT, Texas Tech     •    JJ: Panthers traded up from 51 to 49 (pick swap with Minnesota) to grab Hunter. Played audio from Panthers area scout Kaden McLuhan, who scouted Hunter.     •    Scout Kaden McLuhan (audio): Said Hunter’s size is immediately striking, and that everyone around him spoke glowingly about his character, energy, and love for the game.     •    Luke: Praised Hunter as a massive (6’3”, 320 lbs, ~34” arms) two-gap nose tackle who fits perfectly in the Evero defense. Compared his prospect profile to Akiem Hicks. Said having Derek Brown, Bobby Brown, Derrick Brown, Terson Wharton, and now Hunter creates varied body types that stress offensive linemen.     •    JJ: Noted Hunter ranked third among all prospects in run-stuff rate and sixth in interior pass-rush win rate — addressing a perception that he couldn’t rush the passer. Rounds 3–7 Highlights     •    Luke: Highlighted WR Brazle (3rd round, 6’4”, 437 speed, 1,000+ yards at Tennessee) as the vertical threat the offense needed. Also praised OL Sam Heck (5th round) as a technically sound player whose “short arms” caused him to fall but who has proven himself.     •    Luke: Mentioned CB Will Lee (6’1”, 33” arms) fits the Panthers’ DB prototype — big, long corners.     •    Luke: Praised S/LB hybrid Zaki Wheatley (5th round, 6’3”) as a big nickel similar to Trayvon Merek.     •    Luke: Excited about the linebacker competition between Devin Lloyd, Trevvin Wallace, and Claudin Cherless.     •    JJ: Noted Panthers had the #1 “steal/overreach” rating in the entire draft — drafting players lower than consensus big boards projected. Around the League     •    Luke: Admitted being “a little jealous” that the Miami Dolphins drafted LB Jacob Rodriguez (Luke’s favorite LB in the draft). Has personal connections to Miami’s coaching staff (Jeff Hafley, DC Shawn Dugen — a childhood teammate).     •    Luke: Also noted Miami’s selection of OT/G Kaden Proctor out of Alabama, who will likely move to guard. League Trends — Bigger Tight Ends / 12 & 13 Personnel     •    JJ: Observed the NFL saw its highest run rate in ~11 years (~52%) and a notable pivot toward big blocking tight ends in this draft.     •    Luke: Explained the cyclical nature of NFL offense/defense evolution — as defenses get smaller to match spread offenses, teams counter with bigger personnel (12/13 formations), which then forces defenses to get bigger at the nickel/“big nickel” spot. Called it an ongoing arms race.
