Coming in late to this so probably already been said, but this is exactly the kind of bait you CANNOT take during the first 3 years of a rebuild.  What good is tying up $30+M in an almost 32-yr old when you are at least 1-2 years away from contending?  Would a 17.5 sack DE be great to watch?  YES!  Would he decline by the time we are competing?  YES!  Gotta pass.

Sad Baby GIF

This is the same old song and dance...

Player wants more money

Team isn't willing to give what player wants

Player holds out

Player holds in to stop fines

Team shops player and has media person put out crazy amount team wants in return

Media puts out teams that have called and shown "interest", in reality no team is willing to pay that high price tag

No one trades for player

Team signs player to extension

31 years old, wanting a giant contract. I doubt he gets traded for a anything close to what they asking. Burns, at a much younger age netted a second. This will be a 3rd or 4th, for whichever team offers the best one of those.

Burns also isn't half the player and we stupidly turned down two firsts for him a year prior from the Rams before the league realized that he had basically plateaued in the "good" category and was likely never going to make the leap to great. The Rams made their offer when the expectation was for him to become great.

A few things here from @TomPelissero on Trey Hendrickson:

• the Bengals haven’t offered him a contract that has gtd money after this season
• Bengals have softened on what they want in return for trading him, had a 2nd rounder & change from a team and didn’t take it

We’ve been rebuilding since 2020

Yep, that's the normal pathway these situations take.

Tampa is a mediocre team that has ruled poo mountain aka the NFC South. Barely avoided a split with Carolina last year and got swept by the Falcons. They just lost their hot shot OC that they were desperate to keep. They offered to make him the highest paid coordinator in the league for a reason and every Bucs fan I know would have helped Bowles pack if it meant promoting Coen. The Bengals pass rush is bottom of the league without Hendrickson and good with him. He moves the needle there and he would move the needle here. If this team is too chickenshit to try to compete with mighty Tampa then they should be relegated to the UFL 🤷‍♂️

Tampa’s offense is one of, if not the most talented in the league from top to bottom. They still rely on streaky Baker but come on man, 48-14 during our “reclamation” and you expect the Panthers to be Trey Hendrickson away from competing with them? They are the best run team in the South and it’s not even particularly close.

The Saints, when they get a QB with Moore worry me as well.

As an aside, I feel very old. I went to the 2006 FCS National Championship Game where App State was taking on UMass, who was QB’s by Liam Cohen. The next year I went to the National Championship Game where App State took on Delaware, quarterbacked by Pitt transfer, Joe Flacco. I believe Kellen Moore was from around this same period of time at Boise State.

Wild.

Boise State of the early '00s might just be the most entertaining football team of all time. They always punched well above their weight class and when they'd play a big dog they'd let it ALL hang out. That Boise State/OU Fiesta Bowl might be the single most entertaining football game I've ever watched live.

I don’t remember the game well but I remember the result because it was all over ESPN.

App State had a chance to be that team but lost to No. 9 Tennessee when Josh Dobbs fumbled into the end zone during OT and it was recovered by Tennessee. Then App had Penn State dead to rights in 2018, up 38-31 with 30 seconds left, when KJ Hamler returned a kick off past the 50. Penn State scored not long later. The next year App beat UNC and USC. Then in 2021 falling to Miami, in Miami by two points. 2022 beating No. 5 Texas A&M.

That’s a wild list but App never got the same opportunity as Boise while on that rise.

Anyway, feeling old.

Truth be told, if App had realized this NIL stuff was coming down the pipeline I don't think they would've ever made the leap to D1. I never like it for them anyway. I'd rather compete for titles in D1AA than compete for toilet bowls in D1.
