The Panthers have an effort problem

As I said before, I'll reserve judgment until week 1.  However, if the Panthers come out flat yet again, this regime has to start taking preseason more serious.  This teams acts like they are the Eagles or Chiefs in preseason and they don't have the track record or talent to act this way.

as Morgan would say.....we lack "dawgs".

I will say, I do think this team/era lacks a certain energy to it.  I don't see the players rostered that provide it.  Canales is a rah rah HC.  Bryce Young is as a laid back as it gets.   I mean, who is the voice on the O side? Who is the voice on the D side?

I mean, we have some decent players.  But is Derrick Brown going to round up the crew like a Thomas Davis would if things ain't right?  Who is that voice on the O?

Carolina doesn't have an edge.  I think all teams need a couple players at this level that provide that.  Not just on the field but in house.  That remains a mystery.   Roster full of nice dudes, cashing checks.  We need a couple w/ a screw slightly loose that probably have an unhealthy relationship w/ winning/losing.

Id say the voices on either side would be Chuba on offense and Jaycee on Defense from what I've heard.  We'll see if they take their practice voices and translate that to gameday voices though.

I think it’s something Canales lacks and needs to work on. It’s tone at the top all the suave talk is great but sometimes you need to get on your players and demand excellence even when you don’t want to be there and it doesn’t count

not that he would work at this level but I still think Dabo is sort of the ideal textbook rah rah coach.

Dabo gets an A+ in the whole culture and motivator aspect (Canales ain't on that level yet but he got that positive energy)

But Dabo has sort of this darker side that can come out.   Will Dabo completely ruins someone's day in a blowout win vs SC State because their is a teaching moment that pops up? Yeah, Dabo will undress someone to the point it almost makes you feel uncomfortable watching him do it on live TV.  Doesn't matter they were up 31 and you were a backup in getting your reps.   Dabo knows in his system, he is going to need that dude later.

Dabo is a consummate college coach. He's a recruiter and motivator. The NFL is a lot more about Xs and Os. Great college coach but I don't think he'd translate well at all to the NFL level.

On offense the closest leaders are probably Moton, Chuba and Theilen and D Brown on defense

Hunt is the dude on offense.  Taylor is a bit more of the quiet but respected vet.

Brown is also more on the quiest side, same goes with Horn.  Don't really have a voice on defense.  Wallace wants to be but he needs to keep developing as a player.

When you are a cellar dweller, you don't attract motivated win first guys because.....we don't win.

They also can see our roster and the utter lack of talent too.

The truth is, you have to start getting people(players) to believe in the organization before you can consistently draw in those type of guys.

It's also hampered by the fact that coaches and GM's have super short shelf lives. So the architects are a rotating door.

These are the hallmarks of dumpster fire organizations. They all share these things in common.

The days of Luke and Cam seizing contol of the offense and defense seem long gone.  From what I can tell we dont have any vocal leaders on either side.  Maybe chuba but nothing on the defense.  We have respected vets but thats more lockerroom I would imagine and not in real time games.

Which was one of the reasons I was really liking Walker as he was the tone setter on the field and lockerroom, something we desperately need.  And that is not meant as a slight to TM, as I have come around on him now.

100%.  I'm just saying Dabo while being the posterboy of a rah rah coach.....has really tough side to him that he unleashes on his players as his expectations are super high.

we have now hired 2 rah rah coaches.  Both lack that other component to date IMO.   Everything can't be a clap clap and well get 'em next time.

Canales' is great driving the positive energy but he's just not going to instill the "we will pummel you into submission" mentality many like to see.  I would love to see him with a bit less guardrails at times, let himself really come out-- want to know how he is when he's ticked off/wanting to bleed.  For now, we've got Dennis Morton in the house.

I guess that's where the assistants and team leaders come in the time being.  I'd personally like to see a few guys that bring that no-prisoners mentality within our personnel.  Usually want it to be a collection of 3-5 that are these clear team-defining leaders.

The other problem is our best players aren't that type of personality so it sets kind of a bland tone across the board under an enthusiastic HC.

Hunt & Trevin are the closest thing to tone setters.

Especially in the NFL. These guys are on contracts. They can't get hurt in their fee fees and just hit the portal.

That was an entire culture created.

Luke, Cam, TD, Kalil, Greg, Stew, Star, Tolbert, KK, Norman, the team just came together and those guys really had a cohesive well-defined locker room.  Heck, we had guys feeding off it like Bene, Fozzy, and Addison as part of the culture-definition.

I will welcome whoever can step up and start bringing that type of energy to this team.

Right now- If I'm looking personalities:

Hunt, Moehrig, McMillan, Princely, Wallace seem to fit the potential on energy side of things.  Those are who I'd identify that could grow into those type of players.  Would love to see it.
