That’s a reasonable argument. I won’t put that level of play out of reach for Icky yet, but he’s certainly far from being considered a top 10 LT at this point in his career. Hopefully he’ll get there.

Moton is in the top 5-10 range for RTs. We’ll most likely be paying him like he’s top 10-15 once that contract hits next year. Not bad imo.

He's definitely not top 10 for sure.  I think he lacks the most in his pass protection game.  I would think he would excel more on the right side, where he could lean more into being a road grader run blocker.

But yes you could possibly let Moton walk... he stays an all-star RT for 3 more years... Icky never takes the next step and can't play RT and now we need two OTs.

To be fair, you can't do any worse than 32nd out of 32 since Tepper bought the team. You or me could've been calling the shots and we couldn't have done any worse than last.

Fair for sure.  Though I'm pretty sure I would make it all worse 😃

We could also have a team that no one wants to play for, with no hope of ever getting better.  I don't think we're in 2000-2010 Browns/Lions territory yet.

Now we are the worst team for the 2020s.  We're half way through this decade.  Will the Panthers turn it around?  Maybe.  Will they continue to suck because Tepper is poison to winning?  Maybe?

Back to Moton, he's been a very good and consistent RT for a LONG time.  Yes, he's had a few injuries, but I don't think that the Panthers wanted to leave a bunch of uncertainty at the position.  Regardless our opinion on the FO staff, they see Moton daily.  They have a MUCH better picture of his knees and how much longer he can play at a high level than we can from where we are.

We are going to doing something stupid like trading next years 1st for Hendrickson and then drop 150 million on him.

Yeah, I am pretty concerned we might attempt something really stupid.

The last thing we need, bad roster or not, is another future nuking move.

I love this for Moton and it shows that we are willing to pay our own, and builds continuity on the line, so I definitely understand the move.

HOWEVER,

If I was in roster management, and I knew we were likely not going to be Superbowl competitive this year, which, lets be honest, we aren't.  I am personally putting any player over the age of 28 on the trade block. These players need to be traded to a contender, or their replacement found.

JJ Jansen – 39
Andy Dalton – 37
Adam Thielen – 35
Sam Martin – 35
Taylor Moton – 31
Nick Scott – 30
A’Shawn Robinson – 30
Austin Corbett – 29
Yosh Nijman – 29
Shy Tuttle – 29

Good thing you’re here and not in our front office.

I can get down with all of that except Moton. If Bryce is out future at QB, we have to invest in his protection. I’m sure Burrow would agree.

I don't think trading 6-7 starters a few days before Game 1 would be anything but a sure sign of tanking.

I get the thought process but almost none of those starting guys has a replacement on the roster nor really any hope of finding one.

The rest of them aren't worth fug all in a trade.

Yep, it just doesn't make much sense given our current situation. The smart move would've been to just wait and see how his knees hold up this season first.

Extending Moton doesn't negate the possibility of us trading him later. So, I am not too upset with the extension.  it is really going to come down to the structure of the contract and how much of that money we would have to take on in the event of a trade.

He has 54m guaranteed over the next three years. 93% of his contract is guaranteed... He's basically untradable over this deal.

    • Except it takes those QB's a few years to develop because they needed to learn the mental side of the game and have it catch up to their physical attributes. Bryce was supposed to be a QB savant who already had a fully developed mental side of the game and that was going to make up for his lack of physical ability.  And his lack of NFL level QB physical traits has been clear as day to anyone who has watched him the last 3 years, mainly, he just doesn't have an NFL arm, he can't zip the ball into tight spaces or throw on a line down the field like is needed at this level.
    • Don’t recall seeing many of his interviews but what strikes me is that he engages and goes in depth. Even with the cliche answers as referenced by OP come across somewhat thoughtful.  Very likable personality despite being someone who can crush an average person like I can crush a paper cup. I knew Motons mother had a career at MSU but was looking on the google and found that Mushin Muhammad personally knew Motons grandfather.   His late grandfather was a professor at MSU.   Cool guy.  Interesting family and small world.
    • I think people aren’t patient enough with Young. It can take a few years for a QB to develop. Look at Darnold, Baker and most recently Daniel Jones.   he hasn’t been able to put up big passing numbers either cause of how much we run the ball. You can tell our coaching staff still hasn’t took the training wheels off Bryce and let him go all out. We’ve had some pretty bad receivers as well. We finally got a true number one last year and look how much Bryce improved. Still we didn’t really have any depth behind TMac. Coker was hurt for a lot of the year and XL was our #2. How many big plays or TDs has XL dropped? I think this year can be the year we see Bryce able to hit his stride. If not then we can start looking for another qb but I just ask people to be patient.
