I agree completely.  I’m not absolving XL of his errors and shortcomings, but week 2 was definitely less an issue with him as it was QB and coaching/scheme.

It’s becoming abundantly clear, not just with XL, but with everyone on the offense, our coaches are not crafting a game plan to play to their players’ strengths, but rather they’re creating a game plan and then trying to fit guys into it where each position is treating each player as interchangeable and they’re not.  The breakdown I watched also discussed how no one expected XL to be destroying people with his route running coming out - that would have to be refined.  So, the poo we’re seeing, we can’t really blame him for.  He has gotten open enough often, but the passes are often off-target.  And he would likely excel more as a guy who can threaten with the deep ball to take the top off the defense, but we don’t have a QB that can throw that pass.

I wish I could find that clip of Dave talking about himself.  Dave isn't going to scheme up wins.  It's going to be about the players in his O.  Which just makes that QB spot so dang important.

but yeah, you got to get DBs thinking we can attack beyond 10-15ish yards on a play...if not, secondaries just cheat responsibilities.  If I had to guess/predict the most likely next Bryce INT?  It's a safety making a play on a ball in front of him.

but in terms of OP? What is Bryce supposed to say.  The past couple seasons have made it well known there really is nothing to gain by listening to folks on a bad team have to answer questions about why they stink.  They aren't going to be real or tell truths.  It's just the spin zone.

Sometimes it feels like that is part of the draft process and evaluation of prospects for this team. A guy like Bryce won't poo on this team publicly and will always say the right thing. That's why they wanted him

I think starting this week you gotta work in Tremayne out there.   You don't got to bench XL but Tremayne just seems to be clearly a better WR at this stage (despite XL having the physical tools).   I think waiting on Coker is malpractice.

You gotta do something. I mean, we have a starting WR doing nothing. And yeah, a lot of the balls coming his way are pretty much uncatchable but you gotta try something different. Maybe it's unpolished route running, maybe it's an inability to make contested catches, maybe it's a chemistry issue. I don't know what it is but we're getting virtually zero production out of a starting WR.

Someone on X cut up all of his touches in college that were screens and handoffs and his reluctance to just cut up the doggone field is staggering. Constantly bouncing outside into nothingness.

in fairness, Saunders didn't block his guy on the handoff and Bryce didn't sell the quick screen at all.  The one DE you are supposed to fool immediately sprints to attack XL.

I see a lot of talk about loss of confidence and I believe there is an element of that.

But it's the lack of effort on tape that is the real concern. Confidence can perhaps be fixed but just mailing it in is a whole different ball game.

Based on what everyone in house is saying, he cares a lot and gets really down on himself. I don't think it's lack of effort, I think he's overthinking everything and playing with no instinct or physicality at all.

I’d love for Bryce to actually try to call anyone out.

Buckner was talking about thr 2001 team once and someone asked him if the defense was talking poo to the offense in between games.

he laughed and said “we were last in offense and defense that year no one was talking poo to anyone.”

When Coker comes back we have to replace XL in the lineup with him. Playing XL at this point practically amounts to playing 10 vs. 11.

100% agree. A lineup of TMac, Coker and Renfrow might actually be an above average NFL WR corps for the first time in forever.

I am sure it may eat at him but if his response is to just basically not try, then I think this story is essentially over. The NFL is not for the weak. It's a tough slog to maintain a spot in this league

Yeah, Dave doesn't seem like a "muh scheme" type of coach where he wants plays drawn up for his QB to robotically go through a preprogrammed process. He seems like more the type of coach that just wants his scheme to produce opportunities for a QB to be a playmaker. It's a scheme you'd love to play in as a QB and it's the type of scheme that should work really well for the "point guard mentality" QB they tried to sell us on Bryce being and the type of QB he was at Alabama but at the NFL level all of those physical shortcomings that seemed plainly evident to many of us on the college field are showing up in a big way. Even with his bad decisions I honestly think a lot of it is that he's struggling to see the field. I don't mean that figuratively in that he's misreading the defense or missing open receivers, I mean that literally in that I think he's struggling to see the field over the lines of 6'4"+ huge men in front of him. Reich used to talk about creating throwing lanes for Bryce to see through and holy poo... if you need throwing lanes now you've massively shrunk your opportunities. Now you're trying to play QB through a picket fence. If you watched him play at Bama, you saw him routinely drop back 10-15 yards behind the LOS to gain depth so that he could see over the scrum. You just can't do that routinely in the NFL. NFL pass rushers are just too good. Your OTs can't create that deep of a pocket.

Panthers desperately need someone they can rotate in that got real speed to hopefully turn some underneath stuff into bigger plays.  Renfrow is great but he is just a chain mover.  I do wish they would try to turn the slot into a 2 man show.  Get Horn up for some light passing down work.  But I get that's a lot of small bodies to have active game day that only do slot work.

It's just hard when the entire opposing D is within 10 yards of the LOS every snap because they're not afraid of the QB beating them deep. Defenses are focusing on taking away the run and the short to intermediate passing game. Bryce plays well when we're trailing big and the opposing D starts playing soft allowing for the short to intermediate passing game to be implemented but when they have their ears pinned back executing their game plan we basically can't move the ball.

I think the game breaker WR is a bit overrated. Not that they don't have value but a finely tuned offense will produce open players and big plays without the need for a Ted Ginn Jr.

The tuning on this offensive machine is anything but fine.

I was never a WR or RB so I dont know the answer to this question, but could it be a speed on the ball thing? I remember Cam used to throw a rocket even on a short pass and guys had difficulty catching it because the pass was too hard. Bryce doesn't appear to throw as hard as most QBs to me, again, never played the position so I'm not sure. I've wondered if it doesn't feel right hitting the hands. Maybe too soft a pass and it doesn't snug up into the hands for a good grip like a harder pass would. Just a thought.
