Nice to win, but Tim Weaver of SI has key duds among the studs

Dud: DC Ejiro Evero

"The Panthers defense had some bright spots this week, but still too many weaknesses - and there's been no effort at all to change things up and minimize them. Apparently since head coach Dave Canales has no control over this defense, the blame has to fall on defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, who should have yanked Trevin Wallace, Christian Rozeboom and Nick Scott weeks ago."

Dud: HC Dave Canales

"There are plenty of little problems that are worth criticizing Canales for. The operation on offense is stll far too messy in general there are too many pre-snap penalties especially. When it comes to lineup decisions, there are plenty of players getting time they don't deserve - DeeJay Dallas was added to the list this week. Then there's how Canales is misusing his talents - like having Jimmy Horn Jr. function as a jet-sweep-only kind of weapon. Worst of all was the lack of passion that Canales showed in the third quarter when he officials made an egregious reversal that cost his team a huge first down. Tetairoa McMillan was mauled by Jack Jones as he tried to reel in a deep catch, and initially they threw a flag but then withdrew it. Canales' reaction was far too understated considering the situation, and it speaks once again to the lack of urgency in his coaching. The comeback win is nice, but the Panthers deserve someone who's going to get angry when that happens, and Canales just doesn't seem to have it in his DNA.

I agree with most everything that was said, by the way. From Bryce's turnovers and lack of production, to making Scourton and Umanmielen the starters at outside linebacker. I don't know who we'd put in for Rozeboom though. He's likely our best option at MLB until next season.

It's good to get a win, but we need more consistency with getting the players, whether they're rookies or not, that give us the best chance to win the games in the damned games.

You can take it all with a grain of salt. I'm no fan of Young or Evero, and highly skeptical of Canales, and it seems that Tim Weaver feels the same way.

Dude must not have watched the game. Wallace and Rozeboom played well and made some big stops. Not sure about Scott but he didn't have any screw ups and Ransom was in there quite a bit. His comment about Canales not throwing a temper tantrum on the blown PI call is stupid as well. That's not his personality, he did say something to the refs but didn't go ballistic.

It's a weird gripe to list a guy as a dud in large part because in your eyes he didn't throw a big enough fit on the sidelines over a bad call. A fit that would've changed absolutely nothing.

He has been coaching us long enough to not be phased by missed calls lol.

Weird to mention the two LB's.

Wallace played all snaps last game and actually got promoted to main ILB playing all three downs while Rozeboom went down to 1st/2nd down snaps mostly.

Both players played their best game of the season... In turn the defense probably played it's best game of the season as well.

they also gave the green dot to Wallace last game to call the plays in the huddle

Weird time to call Evero a dud after that game. Dude actually made adjustments at the half and took away the open 10-15 yard routes on/between the seams. And Rozeboom played far and away his best game yesterday. As much as we in general would like to see Wallace/Rozeboom get yanked, what other LB are we throwing out there? Evero has used big nickel enough times this year and substitutes Ransom for one of our LBs or down lineman pretty often.

No clue why Scott is on the field still (and playing all defensive snaps). Only reason I can guess is because he knows Evero's system and communicates to the rest of the secondary what to do?? No idea - grasping at straws.

I mean, you guys can be satisfied all you want. The two teams that we have beaten have helped us win to varying degrees. I'm not going to be fooled again by hollow wins. We haven't actually beaten a decent team in years. If we actually beat a good team, then perhaps we'll have something legitimate to get hopeful about, but even then we have to string some quality wins together.

    • Tell me something I don’t know. I said right there in what you quoted I wasn’t optimistic. I said I could still be hopeful. Which ain’t the same but will have to do.  I have optimism regarding more compartmentalization aspects of the team. Some players. The good draft we had is cause for optimism. Maybe that Tepper is actually being less harmful. Maybe.  I had some for Canales but his meter is about 50% right now with me.  Etc
    • Got a little more juice in us this period. Gotta get these chances to start falling. Ducks and us keep getting these chippies that are missing. First team to start banging these in and I think the floodgates open.
    • The things that make people give up on him is that he is getting worse in terms of simple football things and he isn't improving on much in terms of being a WR. He has improved his drops but then he has increased his insanely boneheaded penalties. I mean, the dude has THREE false start penalties. That is the second most on the team.  Couple that with his obvious limitations in terms of field vision, agility, etc and you just start to wonder what there really is to even believe in. I'll put it this way, when such a notoriously terrible personnel management coach like Canales gives up on you, that's saying a lot. He has ridden more bums for longer than any of us care to remember.
