REPORT: Rico Dowdle is rumored to be open for trade by the Panthers

Meh.  Give me another 9 games of Rico.

We aren’t a playoff team and he walks for nothing after this year. Any player that’s in his last year and we don’t plan on extending should be worth looking at for picks.

Look I realize we're not a legit playoff contender.  But this a 4-4 team and Bryce's make or break year.  If we're stripping the team for parts, then go ahead and fire Canales and cut Bryce because that's basically what's being chosen.

Agreed. If anything I say trade Chuba, run Rico rest of the season. No one said you had to resign him. We can get another back.

I would be highly skeptical Rico is worth more to another team than us right now. Chuba makes more sense for us to trade.

Chuba makes more sense if only looking at player vs player. Chuba is not getting traded given his contract.

So we're tanking now at 4-4?

It’s not tanking. The Pats are over here getting return on players and they have one of the best records. To me it’s good roster management with some exceptions. We can  wait until after the GB game though. Rico’s value will never be higher than it is now. We can roll with Chuba and ETN IMO.

Here’s a quick look at recent NFL compensatory picks that were tied (at least in part) to teams losing a running back in free agency:

  • 2019 NFL Draft (for 2018 FA):
    • Patriots — Round 6 (for Dion Lewis leaving for the Titans). Over the Cap

  • 2022 NFL Draft (for 2021 FA):
    • Packers — Round 7 (for Jamaal Williams leaving for the Lions). SI+1

  • 2023 NFL Draft (for 2022 FA):
    • Cardinals — Round 6 (for Chase Edmonds leaving for the Dolphins). Over the Cap+2Arizona Cardinals+2

  • 2024 NFL Draft (for 2023 FA):
    • No RB departures ended up producing a listed comp pick in the NFL’s 2024 release/evaluations. Over the Cap+1

  • 2025 NFL Draft (for 2024 FA):
    • Cowboys — projected/awarded comp picks in the 2025 cycle included one attributable in part to Tony Pollard’s departure (commonly projected as a Round 6 value).

If I was told we could sign Rico on a cheap 1 year deal, use him up while Chuba was hurt and grab some wins with him and then flip him for a pick I’d be thrilled. We don’t need to be shortsighted like we have in the past.

It'd be the most Panthers thing ever though to end up trading Rico to the Pats after they call to ask about Chuba assuming we wouldn't want to trade Rico for the same price they were willing to pay for Rico. Conversation like...

Hey, we wanted to call to ask about the possible availability of Chuba.

Well, maybe what were you thinking?

Say... a 4th?

Well, we really like Chuba. Not sure we'd take a 4th... what about Rico?

A 4th is all we want to part with.

Yeah, Rico for a 4th. That's what we're offering.

Oh wow! That's WAY better than what we were thin... I mean, yeah I guess we could do that if you insist on moving Chuba *sound of raucous cheering and bottles popping in the background*

yeah this is completely possible.  I don't understand this  front office and the lack of logic in decision making.  Rico is an uncut dawg, chubba has been snipped with that big contract of his.

I'd prefer Chuba if we can move him and have another team take on his weight.

On the flipside, we're not going to the SB, Rico is on a 1 year deal so we're obviously listening to offers.

Question is - Do you get something for him? Or do you add him back at 28 y/o next year with a fresh contract to a room with Chuba's contract that is still paying Miles Sanders $3 mil in dead cap?

I mean, we keep making the mistake.

So maybe we don't pay for the RB and get something for him instead?
