I'm not sure why so many of these posts leave Sam Howell off the list. He had good numbers with Washington and as far as I've been able to see he's still on his rookie contract.   (Doesn't mean there isn't an extension or something I just couldn't see anything where he's signed beyond 2025)

Howell is still pretty young, got a good arm and did well in 2023 with the Commanders. Yeah I know 21 Ints is scary but that was also his first season at QB and many HOFers have had rough first seasons.

He is just Jameis Winston. He can't manage a game and he rarely will ever win a game. He will however be directly responsible for losing games.

The truth is those old style gunslingers are just hard to work with because they put defenses in such bad positions too often. You have to win in spite of them which is basically what we are trying to avoid now. It's not an accident that they both have career 0.414 and 0.316 winning percentages as starting QB's. Also not a surprise that while both are under 32 they have already been on 4+ NFL teams.

Not against bringing in a Winston/Howell but it would need to be in a 2-4 QB competition situation. Those guys are impossible to count on going into a season.

You want to know the worst part? We had a plethora of options the past couple years had we not given up so much for Young or at the very least just selected Stroud after our move to #1. We made a terrible move and then made a terrible pick and got rid of one of the best FA QBs at the same time in Mayfield.

The FA situations we blundered but most of the best available guys would not have come here. Darnold would have never panned out here.

Mayfield could have. That was the biggest miss of the Tepper era.

You're basing this off of one season as a starting QB?  The offensive line he had was terrible, yet he still threw for nearly 4000 yards.  He has a big arm.  Granted he has some faults but So did Darold, so did Mayfield but they changed.

Winston had several years of gunslinging as you say.  Howell had one season.  The only reason they moved on from him was falling into Daniels.

I think of everyone on this list Howell has as many good qualities as any.

I am also basing this off of the fact that he has gotten passed around like candy in his extremely short NFL career and the fact that he is largely a 3rd string QB at the moment.

The reason they moved on and GOT Daniels was because they recognized he was not going to be a starting caliber QB.

Don't forget that he was also part of what was acknowledged to be and almost entirely had been(minus Mr. Irrelevant Brock Purdy) one of the worst QB classes of the past 20 years.

This same thing has happened to Winston recently(only 31) after years as a starter. Gets passed around from team to team each offseason and can't even beat Shell of Russell Wilson out as 2nd string QB.

This is just the plight of true gunslingers in the modern era. I have discussed this ad nauseum on the Huddle for probably 4-5 years now. It hasn't changed over that timespan.

I am fine with bringing them in to compete or be backups/3rd stringers. But you need to have a real QB plan.

If that is the primary plan, it's just going to lead to those 30-40% winning percentages that they come with.

It's unfortunate but this is the bind you put yourself in when you've sat on your hands regarding your QB depth as long as we have.

At least people have seen the light and recognize this negligence for what it is now.

Anyone worth trading a low pick for?

Trey Lance - he is young and needs reps. Looked good in preseason

Justin Fields - showed flashes, maybe the QB whisperer can help him find himself as a passer

You are just full of awful ideas. I seriously can’t tell if you’re trolling or not.

I see no way possible that any of those guys would be worse than Bryce. Feilds is the only option that I believe could actually be worse, but at least he can run. At this point Im willing to just cut Bryce and Dalton this off season. Start fresh with 2 vets one youngish and one seasoned. Then, if a guy we love falls to us we draft him. If not we try again next year. Unfortunately finding the right QB is the most difficult thing to do. Unless you're one of the lucky teams.

Also we should always be looking to add a QB. Green Bay is a good example. They have always drafted their next guy while their current guy is still good. Its worked out great for them. QBs are hard to find and every season you should look hard at them. The fact that we only look at the QB position when its "needed" is one reason we are always in QB hell. We've had maybe 10 seasons in our entire history when we actually had above average QB play.

Ty Simpson and Fernando Mendoza will be way out of reach for us in the draft and Dante Moore and LaNorris Sellers are gonna go back to school so our only hope for a 1st round QB is maybe John Mateer who still could go back to school.

The 2027 draft looks to be a really good QB draft so maybe a surprise Vet QB becomes available like a Trevor Lawarnce. Although his contract is pretty much untradable maybe Liam Cohen wants his pick at QB in 2027, so they chose to bottom out next year and build draft capital. I'm all the way out on Kyler Murray as I am sure this fan base is over the whole undersize QB thing.

Otherwise it looks like we have 3 options.

Option 1 is to bring in a floor raising vet like a Kirk Cousins or Mac Jones.

Option 2 is to bring in a younger boom or bust guy like a Will Levis, Malik Willis, Trey Lance, or Sam Howell.

Option 3 is to run it back with year 4 Bryce young

Regardless of what option we pick I still think our plan will be to pick a QB in the first round of 2027. Canales deserves the chance to pick his own QB as I think he's done a good job getting this team to where they are despite being handcuffed by Bryce's physical limitations.

    • It’s looking like we may not be in position to draft a top 5 type QB if there was one in this class so not sure it’s much of a bad thing. We’ll have to either roll the dice on a mid-late 1st type that people think isn’t worth it and get lucky, or wait another year. Really sucks.
    • Baker Mayfield, Darnold, Danny Dimes, Mack.  Geno isn’t a unicorn.   Putting people in places and scheme where they fit is 50% of the puzzle.  Too many teams make things painfully hard.  Like us, we spent all that a a QB that never was going to fit Frank or Dave.  And we are still here.  Just wasting time.  It’s like running Darren Sproles like Jerome Bettis and being confused why the results are bad
    • Never underestimate this franchises ability to due something extremely stupid.   The QB's available aren't likely to improve tremendously just because of the QB contract cycles.
