Joe Person: Ickey is expected to be extended, Mays is someone we want to keep long term, TE, LB and OLB are our biggest needs heading into the offseason

Those are rarer cases. It's just simple logic, the agent wants a big deal so their cut is better but to cut off their noses to spite their faces is counterproductive.

Or when you hire your cousin to be your agent...

Assuming they pick up the 5th (which I am absolutely against) then that tells me they are somewhat comfortable with by for 2 more seasons at least.  Which means to me they probably have either kicked around the idea of an ext or maybe even had preliminary talks with his agent.  But if they are comfortable with him for 2 more years, which it appears they are then they have somewhat trust that he is the future.  At least to me thats what picking up the 5th is.  Trusting him to develop.

So I guess in turn, what happens next year if he is still hovering around qb 15-20?  What good is the 5th then?  Hes going to want an ext going into year 5 one way or another.

He want whatever he wants. I'm concerned about what the Panthers give him.

What would we think about drafting Kenyon Sadiq, TE out of Oregon in 1st?

One-year wonder that has feasted against bad teams/defenses and disappeared versus quality opponents.  Lots of YAC on TE screens. Has a few of highlight reel plays, nothing that has me feeling the need to bang  the table for him.  Fairly athletic and has soft hands.  Better than anything we have now, but I wouldn't take him any higher than mid-round of the first.  I would say the top Edge, ILB or safety before him.

Yeah...no. he's actually just engaging in the same "should / will" confusion as others have by taking Person out of context.

Here's the rest of Person's statement:

Canales, Dan Morgan and Tilis will weigh more than just the next four games, even if Young plays well and the Panthers end their seven-year playoff drought, when considering an extension. Young and the Panthers have taken another step forward this season. If that ascension continues in 2026, his payday is coming.

Notice the "if" statements...

Joe is talking about an extension being the next decision on the horizon and what will ultimately determine their choice of action. And all that within the context of what top quarterbacks are getting paid right now. In not way is he arguing that kind of extension should be considered right now.

Hell, Person set the contezt for this elaboration just one sentence back in the start of the paragraph. He calls the fifth year option "an easy decision" specifically because it's more economical than any proposed extension might be.

So no, it's not a solid answer. On the contrary, it's just another example of the same mistake.

yeah....based on your response, you didn't listen to the video shared.   I know that, because you just made a bunch of assumptions that the clip is taking positions it didn't and views what Person wrote incorrectly.  Which it doesn't.   If you watched the clip, he makes sure there is no confusion about what Joe is actually saying in his article

but it's still a response to Person's article and explains why he/others people become forced into hater positions.  Still worth a listen.
