Defending Ryan Mallett

Greg Cosell, not me (my position is unchanged).

PFT: Some positive buzz for Ryan Mallett

Cosell says that Mallett has the “best NFL skill set” in the draft, with a physical presence in a muddied pocket. Cosell thinks that Mallett re-set in the pocket and threw better than conventional wisdom suggests. Per Cosell, Mallett keeps downfield focus, but his accuracy is “streaky.” Also, Cosell thinks Mallett’s drop and delivery “must be quickened.”

His “pocket mobility” is “a concern.” Still, Cosell said based on watching 400 snaps that on a number of plays Mallet moved, re-set, and delivered the ball accurately.

What it means to Mallett’s draft stock isn’t known. But as Cosell points out, too many teams need quarterbacks this year, which means that teams will disregard their draft boards and reach.

Still fascinated by everyone's knowledge of Mallet's head + character. All of you clearly know more about that than I do. I just watch film

Does he have valid points?

Have any of his character concerns been substantiated?

On March 1, 2009, he was arrested on charges of public intoxication. He pled guilty to the misdemeanor charge on April 3, 2009 and paid $155 in court costs, fines, and fees. Mallett was also punished by Coach Petrino with early wake up calls, extra running, and early curfews.

Only valid incident i can find... all drug/addiction concerns are unsubstantiated rumors... which only leads me to believe that he is just a very smart drug user (oxymoron?)

    • I wouldn't mind a deal that would add Rust or Rakell from the Pens. Move Jarvy to 2C, send KK and a prospect to Pittsbhrgh. Pittsburgh is taking calls for both. And both of them have played very well against Carolina.
    • I liked James on a personal level. I still do. But he had his flaws too and what's done is done. Charles Lee will get this season to showcase what he's building. If he and the team look like poo he should be on a very hot seat. But I don’t expect that to happen. I could be wrong. But I'd rather not be in this instance. Regardless. At some point we're going to be lucky to hire anyone worth a damn if we keep firing coaches. It's not something any of us should want to see because it's only going to mean yet another reset. Best case scenario is Lee with this infusion of youth establishes a refreshing culture change. We'll see.
    • This is preseason fluff, I know he has Buffalo 28 and they might not be are studded but they will perform over expected which can easily happen to the panthers. This is the “name game/franchise name”. I would put us against Green Bay in terms of talent but Green Bay is gonna get the benefit of the doubt
