Let's pump the brakes for a sec...

I'm as excited as anyone about Cam's game yesterday but we have to remember he is still a rookie and we can't expect this kind of performance every week. I mean its hard not to be excited (especially after the short offseason) but I feel like we are getting caught up in the media frenzy right now. You know...the same media we generally hate bc they don't watch our games and just look at the box score? I was looking around this morning and Michael Fabino from NFL.com said that Cam is a legitimate fantasy stud. I've heard people throwing around the word "franchise QB". I've heard people compare him to John Elway and Brett Farve(with all due respect to Mr. Scott) after one game. I'm not saying we shouldn't be insanely excited but that we shouldn't put him up on that pedestal just yet because if he comes out and looks bad people are going to freak out.

So let's all just take a deep breath and enjoy the moment...I think this is the most excited we've ever been after a loss but that's because none of us expected that performance. That game is over...let's get ready for next week and hope Cam performs well against an elite defense. It's going to be a tough one.

Excellent post.

We are setting expectations so unreachably high that we are going to jade the perception and judgement of Cam for the rest of the season.

ESPN sees the numbers and gawks, but we see the plays, progression, and poise and then the promise.

But, lets be happy, but lets also not be surprised when he throws 4 INTs in a game, and looks overwhelmed. But also, lets us know the game is not too big for Cam, and we can start filling in the other holes in the dam.

EDIT: Proofreading sucks.

This is what Clausen never showed, which is potential and the ability to make plays. Which is why we were so down on Clausen and said he won't be good. If Cam never repeats that performance this year, we know that he at least is capable of doing it.

I fully believe we have a really good franchise QB who can be in the top 5 for the next decade +. We'll see though, scary thing is he can get better once he knows when he is open for a big run.

Right now I fully believe he is in a mode to where he wants to prove his doubters wrong. Once that mode is over and he is utilizing his legs and his arm.....

I don't want the cautionary tale yet. It has been less than 24 hoours from Newton's historic perforrmance. I have listened to everyone in the media and plenty here lay all kinds of criticisms on Newton for months and months. Then we has a decent preseason we listen to how inaccurate he was or how it was only preseason and there was no gameplanning.

Well yesterday Arizona gameplanned and brought the house at Newton. They shut down the run game, our special teams sucked and the defense gave away at least 14 points and special teams gave another 7. It was only Newton and Smith who kept us in the game. And Newton came up 2 yards short from pulling off an epic comeback with less than 2 minutes left.

Sorry but I don't want to hear about the fact he might suck down the road or will have bad games etc. RIght now he is our franchise quarterback in the making and has surpassed all expectations. When he screws up then we can have all the cautionary tales and comments about him being a rookie, etc. Until then I don't want to hear about what might go wrong.

Right now I am felling pretty vindicated about saying I wanted him with the first pick in the draft and supporting him all along the way. I am drinking the koolaid and it is damn tasty. Lets enjoy it for a day or two before we get all the 'it is only 1 game", wait until Green Bay, etc.

After all the crap and posts since February castigating Newton at every step, I don't want to hear anything negative for a few days or even cautionary.

who is expecting this kind of performance every week?

get out of here.

we saw for the first time in years incredible play at QB. we saw a freaking exciting game and a guy that we drafted first overall look like a legit stud QB.

it isn't just us. it's the team that is pumped up about what they saw in this kid. he blew away EVERYONE's expectation of what he is capable of.

screw this idea of bringing things back down to earth. it's the first reason we've had to be excited in a couple years. no one is saying playoffs or anything. no one is saying that cam is going to be an all pro this year. no one is saying he's going to be putting up those numbers week after week. no one is saying this is a finished product.

we are pumped because we saw what *could be* a star. that guy that played yesterday *could be* one of the best to ever play the game if that is his starting point. we got a glimpse of what *could be* not what it "will be, but what it *COULD BE* and for the first time in years we have a reason to believe that we *could* be on the brink of something amazing.

could it all be an aberration? sure. but that's the risk of being a fan. sometimes we get our hopes up and that's fine.

we've had ENOUGH reality and being brought down to earth the past couple years.

right now we have a legit reason for hope. right now we aren't being looked at as fools for drafting this kid and starting him right away by the national fickle media. right now we have a reason to be proud and if it only lasts this week...fine. at least we had it.

if you and others want to take the cowards way out and be timid with your hopes...fine, but don't think that your effort to try and bring people down to earth is appreciated. if we get let down again, we' deal with it soon enough. quit trying to let the air out of our balloon.
