Gross talks about the Red Zone

From Steve Reed: Panthers Looking to Step Up Red Zone Offense

"We get down inside the 15 and we throw it every time," Gross said. "I mean (Cam Newton) scored on that one QB keeper to the right, but you know I'd like to have 50 percent of those (plays) be runs. And I don't think Chud is trusting us to get it done right now.

"I don't think anybody in this organization wants us to rush for under 100 and throw for over 400 every week, especially without points to back it up. We've got to do better on the ground. We've got to take pressure off Cam. We've got to let him hand the ball off 20-25 times a game and get 150 yards and a couple of scores out of that. That's what we're supposed to do. We're not doing that enough and it's hurting us."

If you're Rob Chudzinski or Ron Rivera, does a comment like this one - made to the media by one of your team leaders - bother you?

If I'm either of them the comment bothers me. Of course the OL wants to run block - they get to hit more people and it's what they're used to doing - but questioning the coaching staff in the media is an iffy career decision. I would not want to be Jordan Gross when either of those men gets ahold of him.

Should we run more in the Red Zone? Probably. Will we eventually? Almost definitely. Is it up to Jordan Gross to say this in the media? Absolutely not.

He's a smart enough guy and a savvy enough vet to realize that's something that shouldn't be said to the media. I agree with him, but that's something to be discussed with the coaches in private, probably not even team meetings. You don't want the young players seeing vets questioning the staff, especially to the media.

Sure as poo doesn't bother me. It's probably mostly true, because the run calls were gaining 0 yards and they are designed to pick up big chunks of yards.

I just don't think the O-line has the timing on the blocking schemes down on one page, and they all know that. But as Cam would say, when they do.. watch out

NFL lineman pride themselves on pass protection and run blocking, since thats there job. Our line has done a solid job giving Cam time, but the rb's havent been to the second level all year, YET. Only play I remember it happening was when J-stew had a sweet run from the goal line to like our 40 our something like that. It was called back by a holding call I do believe, also believe it was the cardinals game.

With that being said I feel Gross is just saying they need to do there job, in order to be more successful. Sounds like team captain talk to me. Willingness to put blame on his shoulders in order to have some wins.

Atta boy gross

I don't know if I would have a problem with what he said if I were Chud or Rivera. After all he pointed out the basic issue. Chud doesn't trust the line to carve out holes and block for the running game. And after what they have done or better yet not done, who can blame Chud. Gross should have followed up his remarks saying how he and the other hogs would work hard to correct that and do their job this week.

    • Great article on all the Lil Canes attending their debutantes ball. Walt with a great breakdown of all the rookies, as always, and I'm a huge fan of his team coverage, he is truly a treasure, but as a fan of mixed metaphors and superfluous language which some might ignorantly refer to as a "run-on sentence" I never really understood what that mean or where to put the comma after a quote in the middle of a sentence, but holy poo Walt, this is a gem, "While there's a long road left in front of them left to determine whether or not they'll have that same success on the blue line again, the beginning stretch of the journey has been thrown a wrench, and the story on defense has been the emergence of up-and-comers forced into becoming lineup regulars." , bravo, take a bow, sir!
    • How do I activate said Krispy Kreme deal? I'm stoned man you can't be playing with me about this...
    • When the broadcast showed the two benches side by side during the last TV timeout, it was pretty obvious the whole operation is a shitshow. If I was the owner, I would play that clip, with commentary, on the jumbotron at MSG as I fired the coach, GM, President, the whole lot. Bring in your AHL leadership team, wholesale, to finish out the season and start from scratch next year.  Can't fire all the players and fold the season. But, hopefully decapitating the zombie will light a fire under the body and burn out the cancer of the roster. (It makes sense if you don't think about it...) There are obviously issues on the roster. But, you can't have the entire coaching staff completely tuned out with 5 minutes left in a 2 goal game this early in the season. And you can't trust the people that hired them to hire the next staff. If you trust your AHL GM/Scouts, let them run the deadline firesale.   ...     Please don't let the owner read any of this. Because, this poo is hilarous!
