Greg Hardy?

If you guys were "focusing" on his game play, you would be noticing him get engulfed on most running plays.

Hardy has a great motor and should be the starter next year. I would prefer to have another DE who was better at containing the run and then see this new DE, Hardy, and Johnson on the field at times to get after the passer.

Most everyone would concede that Hardy is pretty terrible in run support, but I feel he'll get better in this area with more game-time and practice. I think our pass rush isn't so bad, especially not bad to the extent that we would pass up the opportunity to shore up our secondary (we definitely need a starting CB and, potentially, a starting safety more than we need a new starting DE) or on the offensive line given Otah's health concerns.

I like Greg Hardy a lot and feel like he can grow as a player. I agree with many that we have many other holes to fill first. Now in saying that DE is a huge impact position and one that can generate lots of turnovers and of course sacks. If there is somebody that we feel can be a huge upgrade then I would be all for it. I just don't see that player out there.

Mario Williams is a pipe dream and not realistic but would love to eat crow about that. And I am still not convinced Coples is that guy either.

i don't take seriously any draft that has us taking a DE in the first round.

they were calling for the same thing last year. many people had us taking robert quinn with our first pick and some had us taking bowers.

their thinking...

panthers need a better pass rush.

panthers like taking DEs from UNC with their first pick in the draft. proof: julius peppers

that's about the extent of it.

PFF has greg hardy and charles johnson almost even on pass rushing metrics except for sacks. he also has 11 pass deflections on the year. and keiser and applewhite have looked like very good situational players. not worried about the DE position at all.

I believe Hardy has the most passes defended as a DE or is at the top for DEs which is great.

A deflection in my mind is a sack at the line of scrimmage it stops momentum for the other team and forces the QB to be more aware of you.

I remember seeing Rivera coaching him up on the sidelines over a lapse in run D this year and hearing him talk about it during the Monday presser....I think it was about the Redskins QB getting the rushing TD on 3rd down and goal. I think Rivera said that Hardy needed to remember his responsibilities despite what he was seeing....the kid is still learning and I've got high hopes. Give him support all around and see where it takes him. I'd hate to waste energy worrying about this guy when there are plenty of other positions to give attention to. Over-think all this and you'll never stop.....

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
