Gettis Vs Lafell

I never really thought about how two good pass-catching TE's can put so much more emphasis on the WR depth chart.

Oh the irony - all the years of having TE's with cinder blocks for hands and no great WR depth or development, now here we are with Olsen and Shockey, and we're trying to figure out how to get guys their catches, or possibly drafting Blackmon and log-jamming even more. No shame in excess talent at the skill positions though - bring it.

And like I have said before Steve Smith said that Gettis is the fastest, strongest, biggest, best catching, and best deep threat the Panthers have at receiver. He is better than LAFell in all of those categories than LaFell according to Smith. I like them both though and am glad we have both.

Gettis wasnt even that great of a catcher last year. He caught alot of passes with his body just as lafell. Love both receivers also but sounds like Smitty was being very generous when he said some of that lol. As of right now, Lafell may have the best hands on the team.

I think this is a situation of prisoner of the moment. Gettis is definitely the better receiver, certainly the faster receiver. I think the only thing Lafell is better than Gettis at, is run blocking. If Gettis returns healthy, I predict he will be starting opposite Smith. It will be interesting to watch this battle.

I need to see Gettis at full speed after his recovery before I make any comment on him. LaFell had a HUGE advantage this year by getting reps with Cam all season and the two really developed some strong chemistry as the year went on. Gettis is the superior athlete by far, but he has to prove that his knee is 100% and that he can build chemistry with Newton before I claim that he's more valuable to us than LaFell. That will be a camp battle for next season. There isn't anything that anybody here can tell us that will give us any indication of how that battle will play out. I will say that as much as Cam likes to stretch the field that Gettis WILL have a place here provided he has recovered his speed.... but the experience factor for LaFell having playing 2 NFL seasons compared to only one for Gettis may be a big one.

Wasn't Gettis in Rivera's doghouse in training camp? He has a lot to prove to this coaching staff.

So was every other receiver not named Steve Smith. I think Rivera was just searching for an excuse to bring in Naanee. Yet Rivera also said good things about Gettis as well.

i thought lafell was the one in the doghouse.

he even brought it up in the last presser about the change that he saw and the conversation he had with lafell yesterday saying that rivera rode him pretty hard early on but lafell rose up.

it could be gettis was in it as well, but i can only remember lafell being the one that got commented on.

2 TE sets are the future, they are a complete mismatch for most players on the field..

matter of fact, either Barnidge needs to become a major factor in the passing game or we need to find one in the draft next year..

we all know the NFL is a copycat league.. we should have opportunities to draft transitional players like Jimmy Graham late in the draft, but I think every year those players will start getting more attention earlier..

    • If we don't go OT, we will regret it.  What bothers me?  Are we going to get a starting-caliber OT at 19?  I think the draft is solid at OT, and the more I read up and watch video, the more I watch Lomu, the more I want him.   I see Freeling as a RT who needs some work in run blocking (since we need to run first, maybe not a good fit) and I see Proctor ending up as a Guard.  After Lomu (assuming Mouigia and fanu are gone), I think we wait until round 2.  In round 2, there are about 3-4 I like (Zuhn--good pass blocker and VERY underrated right now; Tiernan is a very good pass blocker as is Miller from Clemson, but both are not good in the run game.  Max Ixxxxx from Ariz St is impressive too---technically, there is not a of difference in these second tier guys--good in pass pro, need work in the run game.   If we wait until round 2 for an OT, we probably need to sign Nijman and start him early.   I almost think this is what we should do if Lomu is gone.  There is a big dropoff after him, imo, and I think we'd get better value if a stud ILB or edge is there.  Someone like TJ Parker Clemson makes sense. If Lomu is gone, trading back might be the play.
    • And what is x gunna help with except show him what not to do. Plus for the first year and a half he was just an obstacle
    • I understand that some people want WR. I am solidly against using yet another high pick there. Coker is pretty good and we used No picks on him.  What I think we really need at WR is a little bit of a Smitty lite. It is ridiculous to say let’s get a Smitty because you just can’t do that, but someone not tall and long striding but more in his mold. I think we’d have a pretty well rounded group.    Looking at tackle, with replacing Moton looming, it just seems like the no brainer.  You fill in Icky short term. Depending on how he recovers, and how the new guy plays, you go from there. A tackle at 19 is most likely either a LOT, a ROT, or a big talented guard, at worst. We will need all three in the next couple of years.  I would love to have a stud ILB be there at 19 but the OL is the responsible thing to do I believe.
