Peyton Hillis Believes In 'madden Curse' After Injury-Plagued Season

So Prince did some purple voodoo on Madden?

Eta: Come to think of it, why did the curse start?

The Red Sox sold Ruth.

The Cubs pissed off a guy with a goat.

Cassandra shot Apollo down.

Ham saw his dad's package.

What's the reason behind this "curse"?

Dont forget, according to the criteria for being cursed by the Madden cover two things have to happen:

1.) You have to be a Super Star your previous NFL season and win the cover.

2.) You have to fall short of winning the Super Bowl.

With those two criteria, it is mathematically impossible to ever get someone not cursed on the cover if you are using the sampling size of the last 10 years. Maybe for Madden 2005 if they would have put Brady on the cover but they didn't put white QB's on the cover back then, it wasn't exactly a QB league until around 2006 (which is the year for Madden 07). So yeah, not a single player would have been able to escape the curse no matter who they put on the cover from available players they could have picked.

You can see this affect when they say that Larry Fitz and Drew Brees failed to escape the curse.

Of course, what would an idiotic claim be without excluding the data set that doesn't support it.

Because we learned in our statistics class to avoid events that happen 12-13 times in a row, those things are really common. For example, flipping a coin and coming up with heads 13 times in a row, happens all the time!

Just curious, if you worked for a company that asked you to deliver a package to a property by a big radio tower on an overcast day, and before going you find out that every single one of the previous 12 employees that made the same delivery were struck by lightning and are either dead or injured. Would you rationalize that with the same result happening 12 times in a row there must be something at the property greatly increasing chances of lightning OR would you just dismiss what happened to the previous 12 and rationalize you have a 1 in 154k chance of getting hit!?

So you know from someone who actually took a statistics class, having the same outcome 12 of the last 12 times is not a coincidence. Not saying there is a supernatural force at work either, but there can be an actual rational explanation. It could even be a couple of factors from the person coming off a career year and then regressing to the mean. There can be a subconscious factor where the player pushes themselves to replicate the previous season and that can result in taking more chances they normally wouldn't which increases chance of injury. That is just one of many possible rational explanations as to why it happens which proves it doesn't need to be some supernatural voodoo at work.

Keep thinking its real.

How many on the cover taken their teams to the playoffs?

Curse is a joke. That is why when it doesn't effect players the injury curse gets expanded and then the madden curse means a bad singular play or a change in a stat.

    • Hello, soccer fans [crickets, tumbleweed flies by]. The World Cup kicks off in less than 2 weeks and, well, 🇺🇸USA USA USA🇺🇸 and all. We beat Senegal 3-2 yesterday in a tune-up friendly at BoA, with Christian Pulisic finally entering the scoring column.  How will we do in the World Cup once our tournament kicks off on the 12th? Well, there are 48 teams (assuming Iran is there) and it feels like one of two thing happens: we get grouped for the first time since '98, or we make it to the Round of 16 for the third time in the last four World Cups. I tried out the lottery for an Atlanta game and struck out, so yesterday was as World Cup as I'll get for in-person ($285/ticket for like Norway vs $39/ticket for USMNT right beforehand was a layup).  The U.S. has a travel-heavy schedule in group play, playing in LA, Seattle and LA. Real road warrior mentality being built. Glad the east coast gets worse kickoff times for a NA World Cup than a Qatar World Cup.
    • Well, that's the thing. Drafting players only for their physical measurables as you are suggesting only really happened during 2024, and X unfortunately has become the poster child for that. To be clear, it's not necessarily about drafting RAS over skill, but RAS over NFL-readiness and/or a solid body of work. Lots of players show skill in college, but those skills don't necessarily translate to the NFL for a multitude of reasons. But, getting back to the main point, to be clear, I believe that our FO is still enamored with physical gifts (who wouldn't be?), but now they're letting Dr. Eric Eager's proprietary system--his "secret sauce" prioritize the players that the Panthers draft, and it seems like it weighs not only a solid body of work, relative to a college career of course, but consistent gradual improvement as evidenced by production pretty highly.
    • Its a good article about how pathetically bad our past drafts ('23 and '24) have been. Building the team in '23 since we weren't ready yet and taking your qb in '24 made so much more sense in hindsight. Ladd McConkey over XL is pretty much a given but not sure it does as much to change Bryce's trajectory as the author suggests.  As bad as '23 and '24 drafts were, the '25 and '26 really give me hope.
