Proposal to rename street after Cam Newton meets with resistance

South Fulton, Georgia is near where Cam Newton went to high school and he has some family living there, so someone decided it would be a good idea to name a stretch of Scarborough Road in his honor.

As the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports, the decision is not being met with open arms by some local residents. At a public hearing last week, people objected to the costs they would incur switching their records to Cam Newton Drive and also brought up Newton’s collegiate indiscretions as a reason not to have a road named after the Panthers quarterback.

Unfortunately for those of us who would love to tie two different Newton stories together, the anti-Cam Newton Drive faction hasn’t started a petition that people would sign in exchange for money.

South Fulton Commissioner Bill Edwards said that it wasn’t necessary to delve into personal attacks on Newton and his family.Per Edwards, if residents don’t want the name to change, it won’t change and there’s another public hearing Tuesday night on the issue.

Even with Newton hitting the NFL operating at full speed as a rookie, it seems like a bit early to start renaming things after the man. One never knows what twists and turns life is going to take and, as Deadspin points out, these decisions can come back to haunt athletes later in life. Brien Taylor had a street in North Carolina named after him when he was drafted first overall by the Yankees only to wind up living with his parents on the same street after his baseball career disappeared following a shoulder injury.

There’s no reason to think Newton is heading down a similar road, but you might as well wait until he turns 25 before hanging his name on major thoroughfares.

Oh yeah, fug naming a street in the ATL after Cam. Fug ATL period.

There was a street in Wilmington near the house I grew up in named Hooker Rd. That thing was stolen every week. They finally put in a concrete post and bolted the sign into it.

Oh yeah, fug naming a street in the ATL after Cam. Fug ATL period.

i had a friend who lived on that street, i forgot the corner it was on but definitely hooker.

it's not hard to believe there would be some resistance to naming a street after a non-war-hero 21 yr old

Honestly, if I had to change my address on all my records - without having actually moved - I'd probably be annoyed too. Don't know that I would oppose the effort based solely on that, but it'd legitimately be a pain.

As to the merit of the idea itself though, realistically, this is kinda premature. I'd wait till there's more than just a college championship and a great rookie season to talk about before I go changing street names, erecting statues and whatever else. If a good/great rookie season is all you need, you could arguably justify Matt Ryan Boulevard.

Wait until he at least has a Super Bowl ring.

      okay I found this and it sounds like my hopes for the first surgery being not such a great job seems like it could be actual reality.  I only hoped because that would give a better chance for recovery and ia a possible scenario so I just thought it could be possible. Had no real evidence of it. But I’ll be damned.    This is a detailed report of Brooks’ surgery and the condition of his knee after the failed repair.     https://x.com/jmthrivept/status/2055743129408704806?s= Sparked by some very good questions by @CoachspeakIndex, here’s some info on Jonathon Brooks: 1. Speculation that the first graft/ACLR by Dr. Cooper didn’t “take” or at least was too lax, leading to failure and re-tear. Brooks dealt with issues cutting, progressing in his rehab into the early stages of 2024 and then re-tore it late 2024, requiring a second ACLR in January 2025 (essentially revision). Notably, CAR prolonged Brooks’ rehab process through Sept-Oct due to issues progressing into the next stages of rehab. 2. Second surgery performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who has extensive experience with revisions. He did a double bundle technique, harvesting graft from Brooks’ left patellar tendon and a strip of his right IT Band (his right patellar tendon had been utilized for the prior graft in 2023. The double bundle technique significantly increases rotational stability of the knee, leading to a stronger and more secure graft/reconstruction. Also to note, Brooks’ surgery wasn’t significantly delayed, meaning that the tunnels from his prior ACLR were in good shape and they didn’t need to perform bone grafts to fill in (would have delayed 2nd surgery by 5-6 months). Essentially, reading the tea leaves tells me that everything else except for the graft itself was still in good quality within his knee. Good sign for future.  3. Typically, you see a performance increase anywhere from 16-20 months post-revision. Brooks will be ~21 months out from his second surgery by the time Week 1 hits. His knee should be more stable and stronger this time around, with adequate time for healing and return to all movement patterns. I’m not viewing this situation as a typical “Player __ had TWO ACL tears, he’s cooked” situation. Rather, I’m viewing it as the first procedure failed, but the second procedure is significantly stronger and should allow him to return to form this time around. I don’t know why it posted as a link but there it is.

      How can you say they aren’t trying to win now with all the moves made in free agency? Or is trading first round picks the only way to be win now? I’d be fine never trading another first round pick again, win now be damned.
