What does Gettleman need to do to make you optimistic for 2013?

start cleaning up Hurney's mess.....which will tick off a good number of fans.

If we were just going to play Hurney magic and move money keeping messes to deal with the following year....then we should of just kept Hurn-dawg. We need to start making room for Gentlemen players and start moving Hurney guys out that don't fit our new "core".

I agree with alot of this. We need to do something with our running backs. I say it should be Stewart. He is only three and a half years younger and plays like he has more wear and tear than D-Lo. People on the board are starting to come around to the idea a little at a time. I believe we should give Gross one last year too if we cannot draft a tackle. I disagree on Martin though. I believe we should sign him to something cheap and let him play special teams. One of those guys we are familiar with type deals. All we need are a couple of more o-lineman and we need to address DT situation immediately. Inside out is how it should be done. WR, CB, and Safety follow after the trenches. I disagree on Martin though. I believe we should sign him to something cheap and let him play special teams. One of those guys we are familiar with type deals. With last year's run with our "young guys", we should know exactly where to go in FA and the draft.

I think we should cut Stewart as well. As hard as it is for me to say that, DLo probably has 3 years left in him. We can draft another running back in 3 years. I love stewart he is one of my favorite players, especially because of making vilma his bitch in pass protection, but we gotta part ways. We can't have 90 million dollars in the backfield. Imagine what we could do with that money elsewhere. As for Martin, he shredded his knee towards the end of the season, cut your losses.

I don't think the cap situation can be fixed in one season. Just too many recent bad contracts. But I think significant progress can be attained if hard decisions are made.

1. Cut as many of the fat contracts with average production as possible. Yes, we'll lose a few fan favorites. But there really aren't many untouchables on this team - if you're being objective.

1a. Replace those cuts with quality players, just as productive but much less expensive.

2. Improve the o-line through draft and free agency. Contrary to some other beliefs, I think the biggest problem last year was the offensive line. They played better towards the end of the year, but they were horrible at the beginning. If Cam Newton wasn't as tough and mobile as he is, I'm sure he would have been on IR by midseason.

3. If possible, improve the interior d-line with young talent. This in no way should take priority of o-line improvement.

4. If possible, bring in veteran talent for the defensive backfield. That group is too young. Talented, but too young. A ball-hawking FS is the biggest need, but any position that can get 5-7 picks next year would be a huge improvement. I love their physicality, but INTs change games.

Saying things like "replace people with quality players" and "draft people who will contribute" do little for me. I can't imagine a GM who wouldn't attempt to do both, and neither is easily judged in the short term.

I like the idea of replacing the scouting staff, but he can't do that right away because the current crop already has all their research done, so he will at least need to wait until after free agency and the draft to begin moving there.

Contract restructuring and generating a more cap-friendly set of commitments is something he can probably start doing in the next month. It would be nice to see that happen asap.

DWill will/should likely be a June 1 cut, Stewarts deal is so new the dead money would be really rough I think.

Gross needs a restructure.

Beason needs a MAJOR restructure. If we trade him we get nailed with another cap hit.

Hardy needs to be talked to about what he is wanting in the future and what we are willing to give. If the #'s don't work, trade him for picks.

Future contracts need smart shape and structure, reward budding talent early to save money, cut losses quickly to repair the damage faster. How long did we wait for Everrette Brown to become something ? We let some good roll players walk to give him a spot, same for armanti, etc.

We need a reliable kicker.

I want a Draft then FA focus on Linemen, Defensive and Offensive. Better lines make everything else better.

I want a FA then Draft focus on playmaker/skill positions. CB/S/WR/TE/KR/PR all could use competition at the position. KR/PR guy might be here, if someone shows him to not fumble.

Invest in your foundation. Poach some up and coming scouts. Add talent to the Front Office.

All of these things are predicated towards the idea this organization wants to win a SuperBowl.

Sadly I'm not so sure about that anymore.

Honestly nothing, nor do I expext anything. It's done, cut the losses and rebuild. Cam will be in year 5-6 before this team is cleaned up from this mess. No dt talent, no wr talent past smith, old and injury plagued ol. No s talent, little cb talent past gamble. Very little to do, but cut your losses and start building toward 2015-2016 season.

Doesn't take long to rebuild in the NFL....if you do it right.

No reason Carolina can't be competitive in 2013 (have been every year w/ Cam, it is just a play here or there too often).....and be legit in 2014.

WR looks to be the weak area if looking ahead at 2014 since we will have to pass on this decent crop of FA WRs this year. You can find bodies for most spots but a #1 WR doesn't just fall off a tree.

There've certainly been a lot of disagreements around here regarding the Panthers' offseason activities to date. Notably, the decision to keep Rivera before hiring a GM, and then the subsequent choices for the OC and ST coach have made for collections of long threads.

Recent news suggests that Gettleman wasn't willing to offer any of the new coaches contracts that extended past next year. And it's almost common knowledge that Rivera's gone then if he doesn't win. Rumors and tweets have also floated around that there's a lame duck atmosphere starting to emerge, similar to that of 2010. Note that I'm not saying there is, but given the actions by the Front Office so far it's understandable how some people may think that. And Gettleman is almost getting a pass on his first year, because of the Rivera decision, so there's no immediate pressure on him.

As another poster has already pointed out, because of cap issues we're likely to lose some talent. So as of now it's likely that we're going into next season with downgrades in talent, in coaching, and with a staff that has no job security. Hardly a winning formula, right?

So here's the real question here. What does Gettleman have to do in the next few months to convince you that he intends to win next year, and isn't just building for 2014 and beyond? And be realistic, ok? We're not signing a zillion high priced free agents, we just don't have the money. So within reason, what can he do to show you he means business?

Simply, I want gettleman to prove and show to us that he really is a different and more effective GM than Hurnia ever was. He can show us that IMO by changing how we address the offseason in terms of our draft picks (addressing the lines early!) and becoming more effective in free agency, even though he'll obviously be limited due to the cal situation (FA was his specialty with the giants, of course). Also, prove that he really meant what he said about evaluating and building the roster unemotionally in his intro press conference. And finally, don't get desperate when draft day comes along! Being aggressive in the draft doesn't also have to mean being stupid, either. All in all, even if we don't have stellar results this year, show us signs that you're willing to stray away from hurney's flawed philosophy in regards to the draft and FA, to provide us hope in the future.

Also, show me where it suggests that it was actually gettleman behind the one year contract offers? All I read was it that it was the panthers in general who were offering the one year deals? Not saying he wasnt the one behind them.. And correct me if im wrong but I found no where in any reports that suggest it was specifically him behind the offers... And where were the rumors or tweets about the "lame duck" feel around the facility originated? JW cuz I never saw them and I would like to see them, thanks!
