Gettis primed to emerge as top tier WR, per sources

what cracks me up when i'm reading all of this, is seriously........how many WRs do you people want?

We mostly run 2 and 3 WR sets and have very servicable players in Smitty, LaFell, Hixon and Ginn. Throw in Gettis and all the others and you have some young depth.

People bitching and moaning about this player or that player not being worth a damn....well...please tell me, when have they even seen the field? Like I said before, we run 2-3 wr sets since we have G-reg. I saw Adams line up at WR maybe twice, Gettis got into a game but was not even targeted, Pilares is built for the slot but he can't seem to stay healthy. Armanti, well, people have a grudge towards what Hurney did to get him here, but he has improved 100x over what he was when he was fumbling punts in 2010. Most teams only have 2-3 good receivers anyway, and if we ran more 4-5 wr sets, sure, let's get fresh blood in here, but jeez, let's focus on OL and protect Cam...i would be willing to bet that once the OL is shored up, these guys on the sideline may make a better impression.

With that being said (tl;dr): We have smitty and a couple of decent guys, let's give these guys some reps, see if they can produce and go from there. Not enough evidence pointing either way!

out of all them WRs you named, 5 contracts will be up in 2014. with a aging 5'9 #1 WR this team needs to stop putting off taking a WR.

I'm the guy who laughs at people who say third string player x will break out this year. But Gettis already semi-broke out with what he did with Clausen. If healthy, he is good

This.

It is not like he is a PS player who has never seen the field.

He had pretty good numbers his rookie year with Clausen throwing to him.

If he can come back from the injury, I definitely believe he has a chance.

It is all up to him now....we will see how bad he wants it.

We also haven't drafted any other position. Do you take this to mean we have supreme confidence in Geoff Hangartner and Haruki Nakamura? Or that Short and Star were the best players available at a position of need when our picks came up? Because we worked out a lot of players at their position as well.

I hope this is exactly what happened. We got to our 2nd pick and this was the BPA. It means he did it right if so.

I love me some David Gettis and he has the potential to be the perfect WR for us. But I can't say I like putting that much faith in him coming off injury. I'm at the point now where I wouldn't be upset with pick a WR with every pick we had if it meant getting the one this team needs. But heres to Gettis and 1,000 yd season.

This. People of the Huddle love them some Gettis, but like you said, it was Lafell who did the most with Clausen. Gettis really only shined in the 49ers game that year, and the Ravens game(Moore and BSP were throwing those games). I really hope the FO isn't depending on Gettis to do much of anything. It pisses me off that we have done nothing in the last 2 drafts to really protect Cam, or get him some weapons.

But that's only because Clausen never had the balls to throw farther than 15 yards. LaFell probably racked up the short yardage routes.

Would love to see Dave Gettleman say something about Gettis. Whatever he says about him I'd believe and if he told us he's ready to go then I have a little more faith in the WR core.

Forgot that Moore was the starter most if the year. But, he is only a slight upgrade over Jimmy. Same premis though....one barely marginal and one bad QB throwing to him.

My point is that he did produce well in actual games....better than a OS player that everyone is infatuated with.

    • with arm strength people often get stuck on the distance  arm strength in the NFL is moreso measured in speed / velocity .which of course is how long does it take for  the ball to travel from the time of release until it reaches its target ? & u beat world class speed with more speed on the ball...just saying
    • No GM hits 100%. I'm well aware. But what a GM has to do is look at the roster, what's available, and future contracts and go from there. XL was a one season wonder in college. He has speed. Who cares. He body catches and his hands are bricks. Speed doesn't matter when you don't actually have the ball. There were other receivers available with better resumes. XL was a project. Fitts loved projects. You don't have the luxury of projects when you just traded away DJ for a QB. 1st round WRs need to contribute now.  Brooks was a luxury RB pick we didn't have the luxury to make. Who cares if Dallas was going to pick him. We had holes all over our defense. Chuba was coming off a fresh contract. We just inked 150m interior line and then centered it by moving a guard to center that had suffered 2 season ending injuries. The most critical area on our line was being held together by a bandaid and a prayer. No surprise when it didn't work.   Wallace is getting better but Wilson was sitting there waiting to be taken. DPOY for college football right there for the taking. That was a gimme pick. If you're going to take a risk on an injured player, the 3rd round for Wilson made a whole lot more sense at a position we were rest stop TP thin at.  4th round and on aren't going to be heavy contributors unless you're lucky.  He did well on the trade for Jackson. Coker, I believe he offered the largest guarantee. He actually got more than some late round picks make.  Those 1st 3 picks, IMO, were straight up whiffs.  Looking back at Fitterer's picks, I think he tried to plug holes because we had a ton of them. Problem was, he wasn't very good at it and he loved RAS scores and developmental players with a coach that couldn't develop a Polaroid. He tried to do too much. He was impatient. His other problem was he panicked during the draft and couldn't read or understand the flow of how drafts tend to go. DJ Johnson was the prime example. We needed an edge rusher and he jumped in at the end of the run instead of starting it.  Morgan's first year looked exactly like Fitts to me. Lots of projects.  2nd year looks better.  We'll see how 3rd year goes. FA also plays into all of this as well but that's a whole different topic of how it played out and planning with regard to drafting.
    • I judge how good our players are by the way a defense covers them. XL draws no special coverage. Coker on the other hand always has a man over the top. It still doesn’t matter. You be the judge.
