Pieces in place similar to SB champ Bucs?

Recommended Posts

Super slow NFL period here so here's a lame topic.  I was listening to Warren Sapp and was thinking that Warren and Derrick Brooks were the heart of that defense that won them a SB ring.  Perhaps we do too with Keek and Star?  Granted Star is a long way from being a Sapp but Keek isn't far from being a Brooks.  They won with Brad Johnson as their QB and I certainly would rate Cam over Johnson.

Anyways we're a long way off from that Bucs team (or are we?) but perhaps Gettleman knows what he's doing in building a championship team after all...

We can't upgrade everything in one year. 8+ years of drafting a bunch of linebackers and running backs high in the draft will cripple you. However, if we could get a couple more good defensive pieces this defense could be scary good. Perhaps, on par with Carolina's D with Pep, Ruck, Buck, and Jenkins or TB's SB Defense. I am usually opposed to bringing in big name veterans that want alot of money, but how much better would our secondary be for a couple years with Charles Woodson? Both for the actual production and the veteran leadership/teaching he could do with the young guys? Maybe that would help us actually compete for the divison title? it won't happen, but I can wish.

Jon Gruden > Mike Shula

I haven't seen you on a kick like this since your McClain prediction.

Caldwell won a Superbowl in Indy.  He sucks.  Shula has one thing going for him....Cam Newton entering year 3.  He could be called a mad scientist and guru with decent odds this year.  Talent is a huge factor in coaching success...

I don't rarely agree with your posts cause they're so negative but I agree having an amazing franchise qb whose been putting teams on his back since he's been playing is gonna make Shula look very good

I didn't say we should...

But to say we are close to what that team was....that featured a HOFer or soon to be on every level of that D is a bit much.  Those are some BIG pieces.

I'm all aboard the Woodson wagon and his age is exactly one of the reasons why.

Bring in a guy for a team that could use some veteran leadership, some experience deep in the postseason. His age means he isn't going to get a long term commitment so for those of you who swear josh thomas is going to be somebody can still learn that he either will or wont be without risking finding out the hard way that he may not be.

This doesn't even mention the central point that he'd instantly be the best defender we had in the defensive backfield at any postion we stuck him at and would allow us to place him at whichever position didn't have anybody step up prior to the season.

I like the idea of bring Charles Woodson in!  Even if gets injured he'd bring a mature presence to the locker room and if he is healthy a huge boon to our D.  I don't think he'd be too expensive now that's he been unemployed for this long....

Or am I dreaming?

    • I suppose it depends on what you mean as 'elite'. I typically mean someone that can play with lower level pieces around them and still win. There are very few of those.
    • It would obviously be incredible if Brooks came back and just ran away with the job on his opportunities like Rico Dowdle did last year. But any Panthers fan that has been around the block knows better than to go ahead and make plans for that. Brooks has missed a ton of not just playing time but meaningful early career growth in a league that has increasingly devalued the position from an investment standpoint beyond one or two superstars. There's really not any comparison to look back on that lines up with the current iteration of the league at least not favorably. The key thing that this RB room has going for them is our investment in the OL. The highest paid OL in the league two years in a row paired with our staff should make it easier for just about any RB to get into open running lanes. But that is also anything but a given considering our OL was largely middle of the pack last year. In the end it might all be a moot point anyways if we again struggle to establish a viable passing attack.
    • I don't have him making the team and I think same goes for the staff, but they are hopeful for a PS spot.    I mean of course I'd like 3 all-world at RB and every spot, just doesn't work that why. Panthers normally carry 3. dan always talk up Etienne, even called him a future star.....I think Brooks will be fine as a 2 with health pls.....  Chubba can carry a seasons load as lead dawg.    Its fine, I mean backup OGs or CB is much higher on my worry scale(Id even put QB room as worse than RB room too...)
