NFL teams going to college ranks to learn how to stop the pistol and zone read

I think it will affect the safety and OLB the most. I look for OLBs to begin looking more like Strong safties.

Stanford is the intriguing one out of that list because I generally don't think of Stanford as being this overly athletic team. They seem ti be more old school football. They run a base 4-3 at Stanford?

 

smart, disciplined players....that also focus on basics like tackling.

 

You can have a line full of athletic freaks....but a QB like Cam, a good option RB, and solid OL....will abuse undisciplined players.

I think Kuechly is the model of the future middle linebacker position against the pistol and zone read. He's almost like a hybrid type of player. Smaller in stature and quicker.

 

He is 6'3" and at the combine was 245.  How is that smaller although he is quick.

I think we'll start seeing Hybrid OLB/S combos.  I remember in high school , our team had a position called "Hornet" that was played in the box and roamed all over the field.  Blitzed a lot, great in run coverage and dropped back in coverage.  Was a little over sized for a safety, but was athletic enough to play it.

nickel and dime defenses/packages are already being run more than base 43s or 34s.

i doubt it. rule changes and added emphasis from the league and refs in protecting the QB and WRs combined with talent entering the league coming from spread offenses pretty much just open the door and keep it open for the spread. 

 

it's not going to change any time soon. it just makes sense that it will continue. we'll also probably see an influx of coaches from the college ranks to run it better and we'll see coaches resistant to change to the spread or adapting to it on the way out.

 

like it or not, it's the way the game is played now. offenses will run it. defenses will focus on stopping it, just like they have always done with every other style.

And Cam went back to college to learn how to improve the pistol and zone read.  That whole 'class' thing was just an elaborate cover-up.

I think what he means is that the prototypical defensive players on the front 7 will change to stop the zone read and spread so once that goes into effect a power running game could thrive again cause you don't have the power up front because teams traded that for speed. I'm guessing that's what he means idk.

It has not been adjusted because it takes a while to replace the old way. In the 70 LBS were much bigger and slower than now and FB were feature backs. Times changes and the RBs became faster and more powerful and the LBs did the same.

 

Now we are seeing another evolution and the defenses will adjust as well. Its still going to take time though and Rome does not pop up in a day. And when that day comes ground and pound will be back.

The spread is here to stay at the moment because of the Rules you have said but read option and the Pistol formation are just gimmicks within the Spread. Like the Wild cat they will be used as change of pace but its not going to be a base for any successful team.  NFL Defenses are just to fast and strong for the Read to work as a base, the Spread has already changed defenses in the NFL and defense will continue to evolve to stop the spread attack. That does not mean Power back will not make a come back at some point when LBs and DEs shed weight for speed. Especially with the fufu training camps and practices that the NFL has put into place.
