bucky brooks talks panthers

LaFell isn't a Victor Cruz level WR-2, but he's certainly good enough given the attention Smith and Olsen get. I don't get the LaFell hate- I think he's pregressed very nicely from his rookie season until now.

Agree with the comments about Smith in the slot, several of us on here have been wondering why they haven't done that WAY more in the past. Seems like a huge advantage for Smith inside.

Been confused by this for years...

He's built to be a slot. No way that man should be out wide. It's a testament to his competitive spirit that he's done it at such  a high level for this long.

Panthers started moving Smith into the slot back when Jake was here....just never in a full time role.

Smith's height in a vacuum suggests he should be a slot WR.....not his play at the position. He can play every spot. Age just means he can't take the top of a D.

I'd be interested to see LaFell's numbers vs. the avg. numbers for #2 wideouts across the league. I'd like to do the same for Olsen's #'s against TE1 averages across the league.

It seems like people think Isaac Bruce/Torry Holt, Larry Fitz/Anquan Boldin, Steve Smith/Muhsin Muhammed receiver combinations are commonplace when that's simply not true. I could be wrong, but am too lazy to look up the numbers that would either strengthen or crumble my argument.

Somebody here did that I believe. That exact research your talking about I've read it. Lafell has similar numbers. It's either more yards and less TDs or more TD's and less yards something like that.

Everyone needs to keep expectations in check.

expectations are a winning season. not 8-8, but a winning season.

not sure how that shouldn't be the expectation. i don't see anyone expecting much more than that.

There are plenty of people thinking playoffs, or bust. I think that the playoffs are attainable, but in many ways I think that this is going to be determined by our offensive talent, or lack thereof. If Hixon and Ginn work out, then I believe we will, but if they don't I can easily see an 8-8 season.  Our schedule, alone, should make people pause before they create some type of mental litmus test---perhaps bogus litmus test---based on emotion rather than the reality of the situation.

We went defense heavy this year, so of course we are expecting a marked improvemnt, particularly against the run, but it's still up in the air as to whether or not recievers who weren't even legitimate starting-caliber type wideouts can come here, transition, and become at the very least a temporary Band-Aid that will propel Cam and the team to a winning season or otherwise.

All that being said, I think that we can have a winning season, but if they don't it may not be a matter of nuking the team, it may just be a matter of finally drafting more gamebeaking weapons for Cam.

if they don't  have a winning season they nuke the coaching staff. that's another expectation i have.

playoffs should be the bar, regardless of who we face or who is in our division.

screw anything less than that being acceptable.

Agreed.

Cam and the Panthers need a tall receiver to throw to down field, outside or in the red zone.

Having 5'9" Steve Smith, as your primary outside receiver, takes away several touch downs a year, due to lack of speed or size, despite his quality production and catches overall.

Now of course, finding that replacement, is the GM and coaches job. Lol.

I'm actually, quite interested to see the package where they use Olsen as a wide receiver. Are they going to use another legit TE (if they find one), or just use Ginn, etc., to fill out the receivers/pass catchers?

Stay tuned.

The fact that we can't win a game when Can throws a pic demonstrates that we need the whole team to step up if we want to win more games...

Right?  Cam only threw 12 picks compared to luck's what? 20+?  and he had 14 dropped ones too.

talk about luck i guess lol.

I did an analysis of this about 2 months ago. God I wish I knew which thread I posted it in.

I want to say we were like 6th in Tandem numbers.  It wasn't nearly as bad as everyone thought we were.  It may have been 6th with at least one receiver over 1000 yds.

I took the top two receivers from each team and compared them.  Ironically all three NFCS teams had a duo better than us.

He threw an interception in each of the last two games in 2012 which were both wins..

The reason Smitty was never moved to the slot was due to Marty hurney's inability to find WR talent.   Lafell is the best one he ever drafted.  Marty avoided drafting players that did not make him look good--WRs take time to develop and require, for some reason, a skilled eye.

Keary Colbert, Dwayne Jarrett, Drew Carter, David Gettis, Joe Adams, kealoha Pilares, etc. Then, he decides to trade up to take a smallish, small school QB and convert him to WR.

Heck, Hurney sucked bringing in free agents as well.  Moose and Smitty were here when he arrived, and he never upgraded or replaced.

BTW, Hurney sucked at CB and DT as well.

    • Bryce also has a degree in psychology. He has an uncanny ability to compartmentalize things in a way that allows him to enter his second NFL season with optimism that he can still be the player who was worthy of being the No. 1 pick of the 2023 draft despite the kind of rookie year that has destroyed others in his position. Young credits that in part to his past. He graduated from the University of Alabama in three years with a degree in psychology. His father was a therapist in the mental health field for 20 years. His mother was a special education teacher, and his grandfather was a psychologist. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/40334565/bryce-young-developing-leader-panthers-year-2
    • This is just stupid. If Tepper owned the team and they were in your backyard it wouldn’t be any different after 6 losing seasons. People would be pissed and it just wouldn’t be any different.  This malaise is Tepper generated.
