Person speculates on the RB situation

DeAngelo Williams can take the ball and run with it

Carolina Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams spent the past two seasons looking for more carries.

Williams should get them this year.

Williams became an expensive complementary piece in two seasons with former offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski, now the coach in Cleveland. He was benched last season before Stewart was hurt, and watched Cam Newton become the first quarterback to lead his team in rushing since Donovan McNabb in 2000.

But Williams will get the bulk of the work with Stewart out. In an exhibition loss to Philadelphia two weeks ago, Williams had 12 first-half carries for 39 yards before sitting out the second half.

Person seems to believe we'll see the Panthers use Williams more like a "feature back" with Stewart out.

Agree of disagree with Person's take?

Agree or disagree with the idea?

We have no choice but to give him more carries...

But I don't see how he suddenly is going to look like a different RB than he did in 2012 and 2011. He just doesn't fit what we do as well as I would like....have to put to put up with a lot of non impressive stuff to get that occaasional big run.

I hope Tolbert gets a bigger role...almost what we would have given Stewart

he is built for more of a traditional offense, or thats how it seems he was more effective(08 and 09).  we dont have a traditional offense QB and it has shown this preseason, or at least how I see it.  Person is a tool and what he just said was already said a couple months ago, not thread worthy.

In 2011, he had only 155 carries, but for 836 yards (5.4ypc) and 7 TDs. Don't see why he can't replicate that type of performance...I'm sure his ypc will go down just by increasing his carry count, but I don't see why he can't average at least 4.0 ypc (his lowest ever ypc average was last year, and even then it was 4.1).

I think if D-Will gets at least 250 carries this year, he will be a 1,000 yd back again...

Would like to see Tolbert get more carries this year.  He has experience carrying the load and is the only proven power runner now that Stewart is is out for awhile.  With the Panthers porous O-Line, getting a power back in there to tire out the defense early in the game could open holes for the shiftier backs like Williams and Barner.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
