Watching other games today

Cam Newton after the game: "Don't get me wrong, now, we called, you know, shots down the field. As far as me just getting the ball out just to get completions, whether the protections broke down or me just seeing something flash open, that was just me doing that."

Unless you're willing to say you don't take Cam at his word, there seems to be a bunch of misplaced anger up in here.

Or, you know, he's trying to be a captain and absorb the blame.

Great coaches make avg players look good, Great players make bad coaches look avg. At some point we have to realize that Rivera is not bringing to the table anything ground breaking or even calling a good defensive game. I hope for the best but Im sticking to what I said preseason. We are a 9-7 team at best.

I can watch other games objectively, I can not watch the panthers objectively. I see patterns and mistakes as habits. Other teams I recognize as first game jitters or messiness or game planning. I just worry because 0-1 gives us one less loss to deal with. In an NFC that saw Chicago miss the playoffs at 10-6, we have to go 11-4 down the stretch. With the falcons twice, saints twice, patriots and Bucs(because they swept us last season).

Btw Giants and Cowboys both look sketchy. NFC west is getting one wild card, NFC north the other.

Absorb the blame by citing "protection broke down" as a reason for him having to make checkdowns?

That's not a very good job of absorbing the blame.

And no, I don't think Cam was throwing his line under the bus. I think he was simply, you know, telling the truth.

The opportunities to throw down the field were there.

I'll say this...

If you want to become a smarter football fan. watching games in which you have no rooting interest is absolutely one of the best things you can do for yourself.

What you'll see:

Good teams play bad games.  Bad teams sometimes pull out wins.

Good players make bad plays.  Bad players sometimes make highlight reels that make them look better than they are.

Good coaches make bad decisions, and sometimes it costs them games.  And sometimes those losses are to bad coaches.

Bottom Line: Our team's problems aren't so unique as people often think.  No team is perfect.  They all have issues.  Every year 20 of them fail to make the playoffs and 31 of them fail to win the Super Bowl.

And yes, sometimes action needs to be taken, but the whole ridiculous "bench/cut/fire anybody/everybody because we lost this game but it isn't just one game they never do anything right we completely suck and every other team in the league is better than us" is pretty ridiculous.

We need more plays. That's a great mind set for him to have if we run 70 plays and he is throwing it 35 times. Ill have to watch to find out how we had so few plays yet TOP. But his numbers lead me to believe he could have continued to pick them apart. I just want to see more plays with this mentality and Cams numbers will increase but we will have a better shot at winning in my opinion.

Only 6 teams make the playoffs? No wonder it's so tough for us!

I don't get how teams not known for passing, like San Fran today, Miami, and others I watched on league pass, can make running quick slats for 7-10 yards look so easy and common, whereas for Carolina it is a rarity and damn near impossible. Either Cam really cannot throw the intermediate pass and we threw it out of the playbook, or Rivera/Shula/Gettleman are stuck in the 1800's, doesn't watch other NFL games and see how to take a QB like Colin Kaepernick and put up 34 points with a similar supporting cast

How do you not even take a shot down field with Ginn or Edwards, at least once. Wasn't Cam one of the best deep ball throwers his first two seasons?

This season has 7-9 written all over it. In this NFL you have to be able to put points in the board, first and foremost. The Saints may have a much, much shittier D than our awesome front 7, but they have a much better chance at the playoffs because they can score when they need to. Just another depressing season
