What grade does Dave Gettleman get...

Pretty safe to say that Dave accepted the Carolina job knowing things were a mess, and from what I can see he has done a pretty good job of not only getting our cap situation straight but finding players who "fly under the radar". What has been a weakness for years is now a strength(D-line), what we thought was going to be a weakness this year has turned out to be a bright spot(secondary) and our receiving corp has been up-graded. Give Dave a little more time and I believe we will have a team that can be playing for a SB every year... got to give the guy an A

It is a cop out but I give him an incomplete.

This off season is going to be huge. Expiring contracts, extensions due, the next draft, a possible coaching search, a cap iceberg.

I like what he has done so far. I guess I would give him an A to this point. But we are going to see what he is really made of this off season

it's not a cop out..  I mean how is it that so many people have this burning question in their minds at this point?

as if 5 threads (nevermind the very 1st one) asking this exact question hasn't been enough...

Here's your answer: It looks good so far.

I give him a B.  An A for cap management but a B for the draft.  He hit on the first and second round but the rest haven't done much of anything. He gets a B- for free agency given he brought in Ginn and Drayton but didn't bring in any upgrades to the 0 line despite the fact that we had plenty of money midway through camp. He gets no credit or blame for Rivera or Shula since he was stuck with them.

Truth is that Gettleman had to be delighted to get hired here given he had so many pieces in place already.  Most times  GMs come in and things are a real mess.  Here he came in and inherited a team that was 7-9 and already had a franchise quarterback and a good defense.

I see what people are saying--that Gettlemen did not support Cam---but we have 2 starting Guards that he found and signed.  We have a pretty dynamic #3 WR.  While not the best, reality has to enter the picture.  He was over the cap by $16 million.

A defense supports Cam..  It provides field position.  It does not require the QB to press to keep up with the scoring.  We have been in EVERY game, even when our offense was not getting it done.  With our defense, the offense only needs 2 TDs to win on average.

Players Gettlemen brought in that are upgrades:

Mitchell over Godfrey

Lester/Mykell over Nakamura

Ginn over Murphy

Blackburn over (injured) Beason

Scott over Hangartner

White over Norman

Star over Fua/Kearse

Cole over Fua

Short over Neblett

Florence over Dockery

Wharton over whoever would have played LG when Silotolu was injured

That is 11 players that were weaknesses last year he upgraded.  He did this while cleaning up Hurney's mess.

While I agree that he has work to do, right now, how does he get anything less than an A+?

    • I don't see it as drafting a premium player to sit and wait if Walker gets hurt. We need a legitimate swing T. Unless you have a Sewell or Slater type tackle that is pretty much a sure thing, these guys can need some time to develop year 1 just like a QB ideally should. They all haven't played the elite 5 star talent on the edge. If we think another franchise tackle has dropped to us at 19, you have to pull the trigger. The position is just too damn hard to find. If it's just a "we need a tackle and this guy has a T on the board", yeah, move on, take one in the later rounds. But if that guy is there, let him back up and learn a year, then slide him into LT on year 2 of his rookie deal.  I don't see us being able to offer Walker a multi year contract after a prove it year, pay Moton his final almost fully guaranteed year, Hunt, Lewis a center and do a 50-60m extension for Bryce. The 3 most important positions on the field are QB, blindside tackle (usually LT), and edge rusher. Those are the premium positions that cost the most and are hardest to come by. If a starting caliber talent is there at 19 you have to pull the trigger.  I understand the need for a DT and S. I've been on the C and FS train for years. If we weren't staring at a potential Bryce extension, it'd make the decision a lot easier I think. It's just with all these huge contracts I don't see how we can hedge our bets on being able or even wanting to re-sign Walker, especially if he has a bad year. Icky and BC's injuries really hurt our long term plans.  If no blue chip talent at those 3 key positions are available at 19, by all means pass and draft another position. But I think it's pretty safe to say we don't have a guaranteed lock at any of them right now beyond Phillips, and they have to be somewhat of a priority.
    • Not completely accurate. I'm sure Roy is lobbying for him and Larry Brown has spoke put in support too. But Hansbrough has made comments pretty critical and hinting at a need for change. Joel Berry has gone a step further and said the standard has not been met. Scott Williams who was a teammate of Hubert's at Carolina has gone all the way and said it's time for a change at head coach.
    • 4.25 according to the ACC network broadcast. If only this guy was a couple years younger but he’s still a dawg.
