Cap figures update

About comments concerning the number of free agents we have:

There are 2 ways to look at that---first, you get out of some contracts and have the opportunity to upgrade.  Of the 21 free agents we have, I am guessing we re-sign about 9 or so.  The downside is you are losing 21 players from a 12-4 team--but how many parts are not replacable?  We will probably retain six of the front 7 and sign our QB.  What part of the rest is not upgradeable?

If we had 10 free agents and about 45 escalating contracts, we could be in a worse situation.

I think Gettlemen did a hell of a job in the undrafted free agent market last year--Lester, Horton, and White played regularly.  We are not used to that kind of bottom feeding here.  Those are cheap contracts.

Everyone will hate to hear this but I can see them keeping Godfrey if he's recovered from his injury.  He's getting 5 million next year if he stays or if he goes.  If he stays add 2 million to that and if he goes we save 2 million in cap space.

We're probably not resigning Quintin and 2 million is a little bit below the average starting safety in the NFL.  Even if you're good with Lester (which I'm not) you'll still need another body which will cost us so why not just keep C-God.  He's not as horrible as everyone says.  Would you rather have Nakamura back?

I don't see how they can afford to keep the Kracken but I'm hoping Gettlemen can do some type of sign and trade.

I was looking at this too today, and I'm in agreement with you. I like our situation with him. The reason so many people write him of, me included, is because he really is the easiest to cut, we have proven we can win without him and he provides the biggest savings. I still want to re-sign Mitchell. That would be a great safety duo.

    • I do think the rating is fair given how this unit hasn’t proven it with production. I understand you have to rank off production, not potential. However, our unit is also in a position to make this rating look foolish a year from now. We have 4 guys in the WR/TE room who all could legitimately take the next step this year, and catapult our rank. A guy under a lot of people’s radar after we took Tet, Jalen Coker. Mark my words, he will become the star of this room, and be the heir to Thielen.
    • Exactly. You’d think 2-7 wins a year (in a 17 game season no less) since 2017 is going to keep us bottom tier. Every year we say the same poo like we haven’t been a bad team the past 7 years. Until we prove we aren’t a bottom dweller, that’s where we’ll stay ranked. God forbid we have OL injuries like 2016.
    • What I love and hate about this team is it’s more filled with potential breakout players than ever before. JT, XL, Coker, Smith-Wade, Ikem, Trevin… and even Bryce are all guys I could legitimately see taking the next step. But the problem with having so many of those guys is that team success somewhat relies on them taking that step, and some are bound not to. That being said, I’m cautiously optimistic given our softer schedule, the way the offense clicked late last year, and the direction we finally have at GM, coach, and QB. Could see us as a sneaky playoff team.
