How many scouts do the Panthers employ?

Just looking around the division, the Saints have 9, the Falcons have 8, and the Bucs have 8.  The Panthers are the only team that doesn't list it's scouts in the staff directory.

Some guy on the Titan's SBNation blog is posting about his days as a scout for the Saints and the Panthers, and I was curious to see who it might have been (and if he was another NJPanther type, which I suspect).

The scouts are not nearly as important as the guy who takes all the data and digests it.

Hurney and Gettleman could use the exact same scouts with totally different results.

But all of the talent evaluators become important when they're given a voice in the discussion. It's not like Gettleman locks himself in a room and doesn't come out until he's ordered the prospects on the draft board. I don't know how inclusive Hurney was in the decision making process but Gettleman and others have been clear about the openness of those discussions. Cam's stated that everyone on the team has the right to say something; that you don't have to be a leader to open your mouth in the locker room. Seems like the draft war room takes the same approach.

Scouts are definitely important. Even the best GM would make bad decisions if he's given bad information to work with from the jump.

True, and if our scouts were poor I am sure they would have been replaced.

What is more likely is that Hurney was being given good data, he just had zero clue what to do with it.

    • I have no idea but I'll trust my own two eyes. He's still playing like one of the worst QB's in recent memory.
    • I don't play Madden anymore - but if they adjust ratings every week, they likely need to put his Awareness down to like a 5 out of 100 after that play and the other play where he couldn't decide whether or not to scramble or throw the ball and didn't really end up doing either one.
    • Just finished a re-watch of the game, and I can see how they back into "Bryce was fine, actually." You just have to be incredibly charitable to Bryce. The grade basically comes down to how much blame you assign to him for these plays: 1. The goal-line 4th-and-1 where the ball was snapped early. 2. The XL sideline toe-drag failure. 3. The left sideline Renfrow drop. 4. The second left sideline Renfrow missed connection (ugh). 5. The ball going through Dowdle's hands and getting picked. 6. The JT Sanders wheel-route drop. 7. The 4th-and-1 end-zone shot to T-Mac. If you put the drops on the receivers and massage his grade a little due to some quick pressures...sure, you get a passable grade. If you don't, then it looks pretty bad. But the only undeniably, balls-stupid, completely-on-him mistakes I remember right now were the fumble, the pick on the bootleg, and a spray or two. I'll just say that I don't really understand why everyone gets so upset about these grades. We all know they're pretty subjective and should really only be taken seriously over a sample size big enough to even some of these things out. It obviously matters that the offense looked like crap. But that'll all show up in the grades if that remains the case. Maybe they could be better about putting in a range? Like, they could go as low as a 30 or as high as an 80, depending on how you score those things, but they had to settle on something, so here's a 70.
