Key part is past, they were no longer core players moving forward. They were part of the old guard of core players.

Gross and Smitty are absolutely core players. Players the team is built upon, and rely on the leadership of, now. Or at least, did last year and would have this year. Mitchell also could have been argued as a core player.

Jordan Gross is the only one.  Mitchell had a good year but he was overpaid in Pittsburgh.  Ginn is a bigger loss than he should be because Carolina has NOTHING at WR right now.  No one else is even in the conversation.

By that logic Peyton Manning and Tom Brady aren't core players because they aren't going to be in the league much longer. They're not any different than Gross who is an elite LT, and Smith who is an elite leader and key part of Cam's development.

LOL. You really don't know what a core player is, do you? Core player indicates someone who will be around for the long haul and play at a high level, excluding QB's in some cases. Gross & Smith haven't been true 'core' players since 2010.
